2-Year-Old Fatally Shoots Mother in Idaho Walmart

On Tuesday, a 29-year-old mother was fatally shot by her 2-year-old son at an Idaho Walmart.

Veronica J. Rutledge, from Blackfoot, Idaho, was shot when the 2-year-old reached into her purse and somehow discharged a bullet from her concealed gun at the Hayden Walmart.

Rutledge legally owned her firearm and had a concealed weapons permit.

The woman had a concealed weapons permit. Miller said the young boy was left in a shopping cart, reached into his mother’s purse and grabbed a small-caliber handgun, which discharged one time.

Deputies who responded to the Wal-Mart found Rutledge dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s spokesman Stu Miller called the incident a “pretty tragic accident.”

Rutledge’s husband arrived shortly after the shooting and took his children to a relative’s house.

According to Rutledge’s father-in-law Terry Rutledge, she “was a beautiful, young, loving mother.”

“She was not the least bit irresponsible,” he said. “She was taken much too soon.”

I have no doubt that all of that is true. However, one does have to wonder about being irresponsible on Tuesday. Perhaps it was nothing more than a moment of being “out of character,” which cost her life. Obviously, she had demonstrated responsibility on several occasions prior to Tuesday, so this is not to impugn her as a mother or gun owner. What happened was an accident, a tragic one that could have been avoided, but an accident nonetheless.

However, there is no question in my mind that when the socialists and communists get wind of this, and they will, they will blow this event up into something that it isn’t. In other words, they will portray it as a reason for more illegal infringement upon the rights of the American people. This will further demonstrate the need for citizens to arm themselves as their government becomes more and more tyrannical.

One thing I was thinking about is that when incidents like this happen or there is some alleged mass shooting, government always wants to infringe on the people’s rights. However, when employees of the government, such as police or military, engage in friendly fire or accidentally shoot innocent bystanders we don’t hear a peep from these same people. Yet, tyrants are eager to go after citizens’ guns at the first opportunity. Don’t think the Obama administration is just going to let this go.

Millions of responsible, law-abiding gun owners open carry and carry concealed every single day without incident. In fact, because a Good Samaritan was armed after Christmas, he may have saved the life of a female stranger.

Idaho has seen its share of those who have stood against anti-gun legislation.

In 2013, Idaho Representative Mark Patterson was smeared as a “rapist” for standing against a federal gun grab.

In 2014, Governor Butch Otter signed into law S1332, a bill which will effectively nullify federal gun laws.
