10-Year-Old Florida Girl Pries Open Alligator’s Jaws to Save Her Life

Thanks to the quick thinking of a 10-year-old Florida girl, who was attacked by an alligator, she was able to pry open its mouth and free herself from its deadly hold during a traumatic and frightening encounter on Saturday.

Around 2:20pm on Saturday, the 10-year-old was at Moss Park in a designated swimming area of the lake with four people in the group she was in.  Signs were all around that read, “Swim at your own risk.”

While sitting in shallow water, about two feet deep, an 8-foot-9-inch alligator lunged toward her, biting her on the leg, according to a report filed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Lifeguards on the scene treated her and then she was transported to a local hospital.

Matt Suedmeyer, Manager of Orange County Parks & Recreation Division, released this statement saying in part:

“Florida Fish & Wildlife came to the park and captured the alligator. In an abundance of caution, the waterfront will be off-limits to the public for the next week while Florida Fish & Wildlife conduct a review and until Orange County Parks & Recreation Division can meet with the agency to review the situation before making any decisions on opening the waterfront.”

Officials from Florida Fish and Wildlife found the alligator and killed it.

in June 2016, a 2-year-old boy was killed by an alligator when he was snatched at Grand Floridian Resort & Spa near Disney and dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon.  The boy’s father was unsuccessful in saving his little boy from the jaws of the alligator.

In December 2015, a 22-year-old male robber was believed to have been eaten by an alligator in Brevard County as he attempted to escape from police who were searching for him as a suspect in a series of home burglaries.

Thank God, this little girl acted quickly and was able to get to safety.
