Yeah, there’s an election tomorrow.

So how worried should Christians be? How fearful?

Not at all.

Really.

With the Trump/Clinton farce hitting its highest gear before finally blowing up tomorrow, it seems like a good time to focus on the things that matter infinitely more than Trump/Clinton to the pursuit or preservation of true liberty, freedom, peace, prosperity, justice and joy in America or anywhere else in God’s creation.

Consider the following:

. . . Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. . . “

~ Matthew 6:25-33

Are these words true or are they not?

Are these promises reliable or are they not?

The world and its Democrat/Republican/America-worshiping cultists dominating our politics, airwaves, and pulpits will assure you that those words and promises from God are not true, they are not reliable, and that you therefore cannot actually depend upon them here and now in “the real world”.

Yet these words stand…and will continue to do so long after America fades from the scene.

These crystal clear words and unbreakable promises exemplify one of the most repeated and emphasized themes in all of Scripture, and they routinely tell us in not-at-all-tricky or hard to comprehend language that active obedience to His Word in detail is both A) a gift given by God’s grace to His people, and B) a core component of the Christian worldview and life in practice.

The true Christian worldview and life in practice, I mean, as opposed to the laughably/pathetically lame and weak counterfeit that masquerades as Christianity in America these days.

The fact that American culture is gripped with fear and that American politics are driven by fear is an indictment of the American “Christianity” that has encouraged and promoted the fear of everything and everything but the Lord when it comes to life in practice – be it educational practice, legislative practice, economic practice, or governmental practice.

Anxiety permeates the land…and most “conservative Christian” churches.

In that light, it seems important to ask if what we’re preaching and practicing in most “conservative Christian” churches is even Christianity, especially in light of passages like Philippians 4:4-9:

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

So we have to practice things?

What things?

Where do we define them?

Where do we find out how to understand and pursue them?

By what standard do we understand and pursue honorable, just, lovely, commendable, and excellent politics, children’s education, economics, and civil government?

By. What. Standard?

Maybe Scripture?

Maybe?

Could Scripture actually have all that we need to fix all of the problems that we claim to want fixed every four years in America?

Could the Word of God actually offer all that is needed to properly understand and pursue His creations of economics, education, law, and civil government?

His Word sure seems to say so:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17

So why worry?

Why be afraid of men, women, or Hillary Clinton?

Why not just obey…and reap the rewards?

Well, the answer seems simple: We don’t believe God.

We don’t seem to actually believe His Word.

Not in practice and not in detail, anyway.

We don’t seem to believe that Jesus has all authority over us and our land right here and now, no matter how clearly and plainly He spells it out for us:

Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Wow, that sounds hard, doesn’t it?

Sounds like a lot of work, right?

And, even worse, it sounds like a lot of hard work that contradicts pretty much every approach and cause we’re encouraged to pursue here in America to fix our problems and “make us great again”, doesn’t it?

So we pass on the Great Commission…and then wonder why (oh why!?) the culture is going to hell on a rocket before our eyes.

Even with that happening so clearly in front of us we manage to let ourselves off the hook for the very hard, multi-generational work of the Great Commission by preemptively surrendering politics, economics, education and pretty much everything else to the Devil, pretending that he is somehow the inevitable victor and owner of those realms here on God’s earth…no matter how plainly God tells us otherwise:

. . . he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

~ 1 John 4:4

The same God who tells His people these things also equips His people to advance His Kingdom in every realm of His creation. When God’s people are submitted to Him in accordance with His Word and they resist the Devil as they are commanded and equipped to do, it is not they who flee. It is the Devil who is driven away:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

~ James 4:7

And, just to be clear, this means that we need not vote for the Devil (or any of his surrogates) to “save us” in an election, just as we need not depend on America, the Republican Party, or anyone/anything but God to preserve His people and provide them with all that they need.

No matter what happens with Trump/Clinton/America, the Kingdom of God will advance. It will conquer; and it will conquer everything.

Every concept will be restored. Every nook and cranny of creation will be cleansed. Every land will be reconciled, including the land that we now call America.

By God’s grace through His Spirit-filled people in accordance with His Great Commission, every concept, tool, office and sphere of life is even now being reconciled to King Jesus:

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

~ Colossians 1:15-20

That’s what’s going on here.

And there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it.

America is not needed to complete the task.

The Republican/Democrat System is not needed to complete the task.

God’s faithful people – made faithful by His grace alone – are the means that He has chosen to complete the task.

His Kingdom has come. It is on the march. It’s victory has been secured.

So don’t be anxious today, tomorrow, or on any other day, even when a Clinton or a Trump is doing something “yuge”.

Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Really.

In practice.

In political practice, economic practice, artistic practice, governmental practice and every other kind of practice.

Seek first the Kingdom of God and the righteousness of God in all things, and those things will increasingly be reconciled to Christ, all by His grace, all for His glory, and all to our eternal benefit:

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

~ Matthew 6:25-33

If, by God’s grace, you actually believe this, then you will not be afraid.

You will find true peace, purpose, hope, and joy.

If you don’t, then the thought of a Clinton (or Trump) presidency probably terrifies you.

Repent accordingly and get to work advancing the Kingdom of God…while He allows you the opportunity to do so.
