In the latest news out of the UK we hear some tremendous news for violent criminals and some disgusting news for innocent citizens. Authorities in the UK are doing their level best to make sure that no private citizen will ever be able to defend themselves from a violent attack. The police have recently released a statement regarding the use of "self-defense products" on their "Ask the Police" website, and what they've told their citizens will disturb you.
When asked "Are there any legal self-defense products that I can buy?" The police responded with this inane prattle:
The only fully legal self defence product at the moment is a rape alarm. These are not expensive and can be bought from most local police stations or supermarkets.
There are other self defence products which claim to be legal (e.g. non toxic sprays), however, until a test case is brought before the court, we cannot confirm their legality or endorse them. If you purchase one you must be aware that if you are stopped by the police and have it in your possession there is always a possibility that you will be arrested and detained until the product, its contents and legality can be verified.
However, accepting there is a lot of concern about street crime, we can try to clarify matters a little by putting forward the following points.
- You must not get a product which is made or adapted to cause a person injury. Possession of such a product in public (and in private in specific circumstances) is against the law.
- There are products which squirt a relatively safe, brightly coloured dye (as opposed to a pepper spray). A properly designed product of this nature, used in the way it is intended, should not be able to cause an injury.
- However, be aware that even a seemingly safe product, deliberately aimed and sprayed in someone's eyes, would become an offensive weapon because it would be used in a way that was intended to cause injury.
- Any products bought from abroad have a greater chance of being illegal.
Do you get the very sad implications of this answer? The only "legal" self-defense product is a "rape alarm" because these work brilliantly as a defensive weapon (he said sarcastically). Almost any tool of REAL defensive value is illegal, and if it's a product like a colored dye (not mace or pepper spray), which is only used to mark the attacker for later identification, you could still get in trouble if it hurts the person you spray it with.
The practical outgrowth of this ridiculous policy is that potential victims are left defenseless, and if they happen to defend themselves from attack, they should also know that they risk going to prison for doing so.
Don't believe me? Read this story. The short version is that three knife-wielding burglars broke into a man's home, tied up his family and threatened to kill the father, Munir Hussain. One of the family escaped and got help in the form of Hussain's brother, Toker. The two men managed to chase off the burglars, catching one of them, a violent criminal, with more than 50 previous criminal convictions. They hit the burglar with a cricket bat so hard that it broke into pieces and left the burglar with permanent brain damage. Authorities arrested the two brothers for attacking the burglar and sent them both to prison for more than two years.
The authorities also failed to punish the only burglar they ever caught for breaking into the home, tying the family up and threatening to kill them. So all of the burglars go without legal punishment… and two of the victims go to prison.
That's justice UK style.
Or how about this case from a few years back? A famous television personality was in the kitchen with her daughter just after midnight when she noticed a several boys peering into the window of her home. She grabbed a kitchen knife and waved it at the boys while banging on the window. How did the police respond?
Hertfordshire police warned her she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths because carrying an "offensive weapon", even in her own home, was illegal.
Klass's spokesman, Jonathan Shalit, said the former Hear'Say singer was "utterly terrified" by the intruders and "aghast" at the police warning. "All she did was scream loudly and wave the knife to try and frighten them off," he told the Sunday Telegraph. "She is not looking to be a vigilante, and has the utmost respect for the law, but when the police explained to her that even if you're at home alone and you have an intruder, you are not allowed to protect yourself, she was bemused."
Yes folks, this is what passes for law and order in the UK these days. The authorities are doing everything in their power to make sure that violent criminals can conduct their business safely, all while ensuring that the innocent public remain defenseless. This is the backwards nature of liberal policies where wrong is right, evil is good and self-defense is a crime if it hurts the violent criminal who is attacking you.Facebook, Google Plus, & Twitter.
