Many smart people in the know are rightly worried that war may be inevitable in the Middle East. They are right to be worried, as this time, it will not be a proxy war. This one will be a direct conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia for Muslim supremacy of the region.

But this is not about two nations. It is Iranian Shiites against Saudi Sunni Wahhabists. This war was always inevitable. There is no diplomacy that can or could ever have stopped it. No amount of intercession by Europe, Russia, or the United States can curtail it.

No matter what the Saudis do, they cannot prevent it, for this was prophesized long ago. This war will be the result of the Shiite End Times Prophecy.

According to Shiite believers, such as former Iranian president Ahmadinejad and Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei, the fulfillment of the prophecy is one where Shiites believe the ultimate savior of humankind and the final Imam of the Twelve Imams, the Mahdi, will emerge with Isa (Jesus Christ) in order to fulfill their mission of bringing peace and justice to the world. Of course, this time, Jesus fights for Shia Muslim. This is why some Muslims claim not to have a problem with Jesus, just Christianity.

The death of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and the coup in Yemen - these roughly coinciding events, adding to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, further set the conditions for the return of the Mahdi, the Twelfth or Hidden Imam. "He is prophesied to appear and bring a miraculous victory over the enemies of Islam during a final grand war." In 2010, the Ayatollah Khamenei even told his inner circle that he had met with the Mahdi, who promised to "reappear" during his lifetime, and that Khamenei will be the Imam's trusted ally or Seyed Khorasani.

The prophecy also mentions a leader, Yamani, who will lead a great march from Yemen to Mecca. Iranian-backed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has Yemeni heritage, so he is, apparently, "destined to play this role."

Ahmadinejad had a film produced entitled "The Coming is Upon Us," chronicling the promised Messiah's return. The film states, "Whoever guarantees the death of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, I will guarantee the imminent reappearance of Mahdi," which is why Iran tried to have the King assassinated - to hasten the coming.

The believers say they can know when the Mahdi will reappear by analyzing the Hadith. The Hadith are supposedly quotes directly attributed to the prophet Mohammad that "A nation from the East will rise and prepare the way…" The film says the Hadith states that "the preparers of the coming will rise from Lebanon, Yemen and Iran."

There are other signs, such as the Iranian-backed militia, which formed in Iraq in 2014. They named themselves the Khorasani Brigades for the aforementioned Seyed Khorasani, the Mahdi's political ally.

The bottom line is that the Shiite faithfully believe that the more chaos and carnage, the quicker the reappearance of the Mahdi. We in the West can laugh all this Mahdi returning stuff off as so much fanatical superstitious nonsense, but this is of no consequence, for they believe, and no one will convince them otherwise.
