Reports are coming out that there have been shots fired at the US Capitol. According to Capitol Police officers are injured. Sirens are going off in the Capitol and people on the Hill are being told to "shelter in place."

The Washington Post reports:

Shots were fired outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday afternoon and Capitol police were telling people to shelter in place. The incident appeared to begin around 2:19 p.m. and Capitol police say the Capitol was locked down.

Officers with semi-automatic weapons were seen running for the exits on the first floor of the House side of the Capitol. Reports of shots inside were unconfirmed.

As of 2:26, the Senate floor was still open and the Senate was on the floor, but police were in the hallways, reporters on the scene said.

capitol-shootingTwo congressmen were standing on a balcony of the Capitol when they heard to burst of gunfire coming from the direction of the Rayburn Office Building.

"It was almost like two very rapid fire bursts, very loud," said Rep. Gerry Connolly 9R-VA) who was standing alongside Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA). "They were clearly coming from the direction. That's when we saw people fleeing, and we realized this was no fireworks. It sounds liked the first volley of a 21-gun salute."

Connelly says that the sergeant-at-arms informed him that a suspect has been apprehended.

Rep. Tim Griffin (R-AR) confirms Connelly's statement:

"We heard pops that sounded like shots," said Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).

"We heard shots. They told us to get behind a car," said Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH).

Reuters reports that the shots came outside the Capitol building, not from inside.

While a serious matter, I am interested in how Harry Reid and Barack Obama will blame this on the Republicans and the "government shutdown," or worse yet, how long the media will take to blame this on one of us right winger, liberty loving, Tea Party types. We'll see as time goes on.

UPDATE:

NBC reports a female suspect is in custody.

The United States Capitol was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a woman tried to ram her car into the White House gate, was chased by Secret Service and exchanged shots with police, sources said.
The suspect was shot, and a shelter-in-place order was lifted about 3 p.m. At least one Capitol Police officer was injured.
"The United States Capitol Police have stabilized the incident," officials said in a message.
An NBC satellite truck operator saw several police cars with lights flashing near the gardens below the Capitol when he suddenly heard rapid-fire shots. Several police cars could then be seen chasing a black car.

Oh, and while some are sending thoughts and prayer to everyone, some are actually praying to the only One that can help in time of need:

UPDATE2: Apparently the female driver had a baby in the car with her.

UPDATE 3: The females suspect is dead. The Chicago Tribune reports:

A U.S. official said there was no apparent connection to terrorism and the police official said it appeared to be an isolated incident.

The shooting rattled the U.S. capital three weeks after a government contractor opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard, about 1.5 miles from the Capitol, killing 12 people and wounding three others before he was shot to death by police.

The incident began near the White House and ended near the U.S. Capitol, where the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate were in session. Lawmakers were trying to find a solution to a budget impasse that partially shut down the U.S. government this week.

Officials said a vehicle struck a security barrier at 15th and Pennsylvania Avenue, near the White House. Police chased the vehicle for about 1 1/2 miles to 2nd Street and Constitution Avenue, near the Capitol, where the shots were fired.

The irony here is that it happened between 2nd and Constitution.....

UPDATE 4:The woman who attempted to drive through White House barriers and set off a Capitol Hill police chase was identified as 34-year-old Miriam Carey of Stamford, Conn.

According to ABC News, Carey had a history of mental health issues and suffered from post-partum depression.

The suspect's sister, Amy Carey, was in disbelief when she told The Washington Post, “That’s impossible. She works, she holds a job."

Miriam Carey has been identified by authorities as a dental hygienist in Connecticut.

Also The Daily Mail has lots of pictures surrounding the incident. Apparently Carey was unarmed, but obviously she was a threat with her car. Her 1 year old daughter, Erica, was also inside the vehicle.

The DM reports:

Investigators have found indications that Miriam Carey suffered delusions due to a history of mental illness, NBC Connecticut reports.

Last night her mother revealed the 34-year-old has suffered from postpartum depression since giving birth to her daughter Erica last year.

These revelations are the first clues as to what led a seemingly happy dental hygienist to snap and drive her Infiniti luxury sedan 270 miles from her home in suburban Stamford to Washington, DC - where her rampage put the nation's capital on lock-down Thursday.

I'm sure we should be hearing shortly from Harry Reid, Barack Obama and Dianne Feinstein as to how we should ban cars after this incident, and specifically target Infiniti's, right? I'm not holding my breath.

I am amazed at the amount of officers, military equipment and para-military people that descended on the area. You would have thought some of Obama's Muslim Brotherhood was attempting to blow up Capitol Hill. Instead, the only shots fired were from Capitol Hill Police. The driver was unarmed.
