I followed the campaign of freshman Congressman Mia Love over the past few years, although not closely. She seemed to be conservative, not to mention that she is both female and black, which doesn't hurt.
It's really a darn shame that we even have to mention that she's female or black, but that's today's America. It does matter. It shouldn't – but it does.
We should react to her or Tim Scott as we view Justice Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, or Walter Williams. Although a lot smarter, they are just conservative lovers of the Constitution like us.
Yet in politics, it really does matter.
I was happy to see her win the election in Utah and had high hopes of another conservative freshman firebrand joining the ranks. Then she cast her first vote, and it was for the Shady John Boehner as Speaker of the House. With her very first vote as a United States Congressman, she throws in with the establishment.
A friend of mine said to me: "Just chill out – wait to hear if she has a reasonable explanation before jumping off her bandwagon." I told him I would, but already knew there could be no satisfactory explanation for voting for a lying, backroom-deal-making, enemy of the Constitution.
So what was her explanation? She did provide one, in the form of an e-mail to the Washington Examiner. "There were no qualified or notable campaigns for speaker within the Republican Party other than John Boehner,' Love said. 'Casting a vote for a candidate who has not actively campaigned and does not have the support to be speaker is an indirect vote for Nancy Pelosi, and I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi.'"
"Love also reminded voters that she is playing the long game when it comes to fighting for conservative principles," writes the Examiner.
Wow! Well, that clarifies things. No qualified or notable candidates other than Boehner? Seriously? First – the other three that threw their hats in the ring had…what… a whole day to campaign! And what makes Boehner qualified? Is it that his tan is deeper than anyone else's?
And playing the long game? That would be like my New England Patriots receiving the ball at the start of today's game and on the very first play, Tom Brady drops back and punts.
Now, as far as the whole, vote for Nancy Pelosi thing: that's either ignorance of the process or a lie. If it's ignorance, she should've informed herself prior to voting. Louie Gohmert knew. She could've asked him.
Gohmert explained to Glenn Beck that this was "a piece of misinformation that people have used saying, well, anybody that does not vote for Boehner is going to give the gavel to Nancy Pelosi. Glenn, that cannot happen unless 59 Republicans vote present. Only if 59 Republicans vote present can Nancy Pelosi have a chance at all." And that wasn't going to happen.
"So anybody that votes present, there helping Boehner and Pelosi by lowering the number that you have to get to get a majority," explains Gohmert, "but as long as they vote for a person, then Pelosi can never become speaker because she's got 188 votes max. She can't overcome the necessary 218 to win."
Love also said to get things done in the next two years, "it is important for me to be on the side of the elected speaker."
Well, I'm sorry, but that's just unacceptable – pure and simple. How can she claim, during her campaign, to promise to repeal Obamacare and cast her lot in with the man that pushed through full funding of it for the entire year? Don't tell me she's uninformed of that also.
I'm thinking Ms. Love is not the conservative we thought she was, but time will tell.
