On Friday, several New York Jews were violently attacked in what has been labeled the "knockout game," in which assailants sneak up on unsuspecting people and hit them as hard as they can in order to knock them unconscious. Police have now charged Amrit Marajh, a 28 year old Muslim male, with punching 24 year old Shmuel Perl at around 2:45am.

According to the New York Daily News:

Marajh faces charges of third-degree assault, assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime. Three other men allegedly with Marajh at the time of the attack were taken into custody but released, police said. He was awaiting arraignment Saturday afternoon.

Just before the beatdown, one of the men was "talking about knockout," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

Perl was wearing a yarmulke. At least one of the men in the group yelled an anti-Semitic slur, cops said.

"I was able to hear them speaking loudly about this knockout game," Perl said in a YouTube interview with the Orthodox magazine Dee Voch. "The group surrounded me. As I tried to get away, one stepped toward me and with a closed fist hit me in the face."

Perl was able to stumble away from his attacker, even as he was taunted by him, shouting "Come back! I can do this! I can knock you out!"

The Associated Press reports:

Amrit Marajh, 28, of Brooklyn, was arrested on charges of assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime because the victim is Jewish. It wasn't clear if he had a lawyer.

Three others taken into custody were released.

Police are investigating similar recent incidents, including in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. At least two deaths have been linked to the attacks this year.

Although the knock out craze has been predominantly participated by members of the black community, several Jews have been attacked, according to the New York Post.

Nineteen year old Israel Blizovsky had just finished up taking pictures at a Crown Heights engagement party when he was sucker punched as he passed a group of young blacks. Blizovsky was knocked out cold.

The brutal actions have also been referred to as "polar bear hunting."

On Nov. 9, a 78-year-old Midwood woman was socked in the back of the head while pushing her great-granddaughter's stroller on Avenue L and East Fifth Street. Fearing a repeat, she hasn't left her home since.

"It's scary," her son-in-law said. "You're 78, and someone hits you with a closed fist with all their might."

Groups of young black teens have been caught on video engaging in the criminal activity, joking about it, and openly talking about it.

Even Representative Grace Meng (D-NY) was apparently a victim of the knockout game.

No matter what the ethnicity, ideology or age, there is one thing that needs to be done to those that engage in this type of criminal activity and that is to beat them down, literally. Let's hope that people in these neighborhoods that this is occurring start standing up and fighting back, with arms if necessary.
