Maine has become only the seventh state in the union to allow its citizens to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. Well, good for them. My state, New Hampshire, was supposed to be the seventh, but we elected a Democrat governor, so, of course, she vetoed the measure passed by both State Houses.

Maine, like New Hampshire, allows legal gun owners to open carry without a permit, which regular readers know is what I do.

Breitbart reported that while pushing the bill, its author, State Sen. Eric Brakey "continually focused on how open carry without a permit was legal in Maine, but if someone put on a jacket that covered their gun, they were then required to have a permit."

I've been arguing this ridiculous rule for years, having to stay ever vigilant that my sidearm isn't covered at any time. Frankly, it's ridiculous.

So now, at least in Maine, Wyoming, Alaska, Kansas, Montana, Vermont, and Arizona, citizens can concealed carry a weapon for self-defense without first having to grovel before the government for something the Constitution grants them naturally.

Obviously, the same rules apply from before - that one must be legally allowed to own a gun in the first place. But still, not everyone is so thrilled with the idea. Truth in Media reports: "The Maine chapter of the anti-gun group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America issued a statement condemning the passage of the bill and claiming that 'it makes it legal for certain violent criminals and people who have never handled a gun to carry hidden, loaded handguns in public.'"

Now, if I'm not mistaken, the Moms Demand Action gang is just another nanny Bloomberg front group who love to dispense misinformation on a topic they know little to nothing about. Of course, that never prevents them from spouting off. And frankly, it's nice to see progress being made in the face of the constant onslaught from anti-gun nuts.

Do these groups honestly think that because Maine has come to its senses, that now every Tom, Dick, and Sally will rush out to purchase a weapon and tote it about?

As I said, I open carry virtually all the time. I carry to the gas station, the grocery store, Walmart, to the gym - practically everywhere. And yet, I appear to be an enigma. New Hampshire has been a permitless open carry state for as long as I've been here, and I can count on one hand the people I've seen open carrying. For whatever the reason, it just doesn't happen.

So for the rubes to think Maine will now become some expansive OK Corral is absurd. And just look at the states with the most lax gun laws compared to the ones with the strictest and tell me which is worse. It's well-known that criminals and thugs hate an armed population. If anything, we should reasonably expect Maine's violent crime to further decline, but the dopey moms groups will never report that.

And recently, it has come to Americans' attention (hopefully) that there is an ever growing threat that even the FBI admits it can't keep a lid on for much longer - the threat of ISIS.

FBI Director Comey has stated that ISIS is now in all 50 states and that they differ from al-Qaeda. When al-Qaeda recruits, you go abroad to train and only then may you return to develop a terror cell. ISIS isn't that picky.

"ISIL does something al-Qaeda would never imagine: they test people by tasking them," Comey told the senators. "Kill somebody and we'll see if you are really a believer." And the targets they appear to prefer are active duty and ex-military personnel.

So when the director of the FBI looks and sounds as panicked and urgent as he does about domestic terrorism, we should take note, be extra vigilant, and arm up.

Someone will have to protect the "Moms" when the terrorists come knocking.
