The historian Tacitus recorded an event where a first-century Roman general, stationed in Gaul on the west side of the Rhine, witnessed a massive battle between two warring German tribes which left thousands of dead across the river.

He ordered a larger stipend of wine for each of his troops stationed in the forts along the Roman side of the river. By so doing, he let them know it was a day to celebrate because those thousands of dead Germans would not live to kill Romans.

ISIS Makes a Bold Move on Iran

Due to the circus surrounding the Comey testimony, a major event in the war between the West and resurgent militant Islam was largely overlooked.

On June 7th, the day before Comey’s appearance, two teams of presumably Sunni jihadists attacked targets in Tehran, the capital of Shiite Islam. The attacks were waged against two symbolic pillars of the regime: the parliament complex and the shrine of the Iranian revolution’s founder, Ayatollah Khomeini. They killed 13 people and wounded 42.

While we must pause to lament the loss of innocent Iranian lives, it’s important to consider that both the Sunni jihadists (al-Qaeda, the Taliban, ISIS and their other affiliates) as well as the Shiite jihadists running Iran have lots of American, Israeli and European blood on their hands.

Moreover, they are both working to acquire weapons of mass destruction aimed at destroying Israel, Europe and the US.

The Iranian Regime Needs to Go

The Islamist regime running Iran, the regime that Obama Administration was so eager to partner with in its noble effort to halt the spread of Middle Eastern nuclear weapons, is responsible for over a thousand dead and wounded American soldiers.

It is common knowledge, during the height of the Iraq War, many of our military convoys were being blown apart by IED’s (improvised explosive devices) manufactured by and smuggled into Iraq by Iran.

Had George W. Bush been succeeded by a decisive president in the mold of say, Harry Truman, or the Roman Emperor, Augustus, for that matter, there would have certainly not been an “Iran deal.” That president would have seen Iran’s actions as acts of war and very likely answered in kind.

To Trump’s credit, he said of the attacks in Tehran, “We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote.” This was the most purposeful and profound statement I personally have heard him make.

But there are several deeper profundities about this event which saw the two houses of Islam doing battle in the capital of Shiite Iran…

If the war escalates, it will be a continuation of Syrian civil war that has left 500,000 dead and climbing. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks and, in fact, its official news agency, Amaq, published film footage of the attack inside the parliament complex.

It important to note that while ISIS is now losing the battle to hold on to its strongholds in Iraq and Syria it is more and more claiming responsibility for attacks where it plays no role other than cheerleading. So, it’s highly possible that other parties were involved.

The Iranian Regime Plans to Counter Attack

It’s a mystery as to how the attackers in Tehran were able to carry out such a sophisticated deadly operation inside two of Iran’s most secure sites. Visitors to the parliament are completely searched, so much so, that most are not allowed to take any belongings inside, even a pen. The attackers got inside the parliament with AK-47 rifles, grenades, and suicide vests.

A spokesman for Iranian regimes’ military arm, its Revolutionary Guard, strongly insinuated that the Saudi Government had a hand in the attacks. He said, “World and Iranian public opinion view this attack as extremely significant given that it comes one week after the president of America met with the leaders of a regional country that has consistently supported infidel terrorists.” This was an allusion to Trumps recent visit to Riyadh. “We will not leave any bloodshed unanswered,” he added.

The Need for Islamic Reformation

Among the many violent verses of the Koran is as follows: “I will cast dread into the hearts of those who disbelieve—strike off their heads then, strike off from them every finger.”

Muslims believe that the Koran must be taken literally. Their God commands the believers to behead the unbelievers for the crime of disbelieve.

This must change.

Islam must undertake its own reformation. And in significant portions of the Islamic world it is.

As I write in my new book, Lessons from Fallen Civilizations, Vol II, I echo the sentiments of the great Ayaan Hirsi Ali who predicted that what the printing press was for the Christian Reformation the internet will be for the coming Islamic Reformation.

Signs of that Reformation keep multiplying. The Judeo-Christian West is partnering with a coalition of Arab and Kurdish fighters called the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDS) to destroy ISIS. One can only hope that a pluralistic free Syria can be carved out of a portion of that war-torn country that will allow for free and fair elections and respect women and minority rights because this will point the way for the rest of Islam to join with the broader community of free nations.

A Silver Lining for the United States

Last week was the first time the Sunni jihadists have been able to take the battle to the capital of Shiite jihadist Iran.

From the viewpoint of the West, it is a very positive development that the jihadists from both houses of Islam are now in an escalating war with each other.

For the time being, it’s a good thing that they make war on one another because it distracts them from killing us.
