Virginia Tech is my alma mater. I don't know if you have ever been there. It's located in a quiet little town in the Virginia hill country, once primarily known for the excellence of its Engineering and Agricultural schools, and its football team. It's a beautiful, peaceful campus; the last place in the world you would ever expect to see the worst massacre in US history… And of course, it is a gun-free zone.

Gun? Yes, the mentally deranged killer had a gun, and he kept killing until the good guys showed up with their guns.

Ditto Fort Hood. US Army Major Nidal Hasan had the only gun in town. And, of course, he knew it. He killed 13 and wounded more than 30 before a civilian policewoman, Sgt. Kimberly Munley, suffering two gunshot wounds herself, brought him down with her 9mm Glock, while the roomful of well-trained military personnel were unable to defend either themselves or her. Gun-free zone too, you know.

Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, CT. Same thing.

Navy Yard, Washington, DC. Same thing.

GUN_concealed_campus_signs-e1356524273267-600x340So what did all these incidents have in common? A mentally deranged killer shooting up people in a gun-free zone until the good guys arrived with their guns.

Can you imagine? US soldiers and sailors, finest in the world, drilled from day one in boot camp on the proper use of firearms, but not allowed to use them for their own protection in a heavily fortified military base. How stupid is that?

Sadly, there are mean people and mentally deranged people out there.

Another thing these tragedies also have in common is that they were all performed by people, including Army Major Hasan, who, after the fact, were judged to have been mentally deranged. And how are we supposed to protect ourselves from these pathetic individuals? With more intrusive background checks, of course. At least that is what we are told will help to solve the problem.

How will that be possible when the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) won't even let the local hospital tell you the condition of your neighbor hospitalized with an allergic reaction to a bee sting? Do you think such institutions are going to reveal to a gun shop owner that one of their patients is mentally deranged? You have got to be kidding! The hospital would risk federal prosecution for their HIPPA violation, and then leave itself open for civil action by the offended.

Yet, President Obama, in comforting the families of the Naval Yard victims, turned this hallowed occasion into yet another campaign speech on the need for tougher gun laws to end the violence in schools, military installations and such places as Chicago, Detroit, and even Washington, DC -- all of which are either gun-free facilities, or municipalities with the strictest gun control laws in the country. Make any sense to you?

Obama said: "We must insist here today there is nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work." Wrong, Mr. President. When mentally deranged people are denied psychiatric care and are turned loose in the streets for fear of infringing upon their politically correct "rights," it has become painfully normal to see violence against the innocent, especially when the innocent have no means of self-defense.

I can remember when the citizenry was well protected. When we really didn't spend much time worrying about gun violence, street gangs, and deranged citizens in shopping malls. There was a time not too long ago when police officers and sheriffs had the phrase 'TO SERVE AND PROTECT" painted on the sides of their vehicles, but not now. The good guys just don't have the personnel to offer citizen protection anymore, and are forced to admit that their service is limited to trying to apprehend the offenders after the event has occurred.

The writers of our Constitution included the Second Amendment, just in case we ever came to a time when our duly elected officials and our hired law enforcement officers were unwilling or unable to provide the protections of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, as granted to us in the Declaration of Independence.

Sadly, that time has come. When our ill-conceived gun-free laws and our equally ill-informed President and his minions in Congress continue to strip us of our right to self-protection, the result becomes increasingly obvious.

However, there is hope. I just read this week that if we have no better means of self-protection, an aerosol can of Wasp Killer works pretty good. And it will also kill snakes, and mice, and even wasps. So you might want to stock up before it gets banned too.
