During the Spanish civil war of the 1930’s, one general invaded Madrid and was hopeful that, in addition to the four columns of his army, he would find a fifth column inside the city. That is, that there would be many citizens there who agreed with him and would help him, either through active fighting on his side, or by giving aid and comfort. The Fifth Column has come to stand for any forces that cooperate with invaders or oppressors.

There is a sad example in America today. It isn’t outside invasion that threatens us. I mean, not in comparison to the threat I’m talking about. In our day the Federal Government has become the most immediate threat to Constitutional liberty, evincing a willingness to trample all over the document on a whim. (Witness, the government’s lawyers before the Supreme Court, arguing in defense of Obamacare, that when a citizen refuses to purchase a particular product, that is, in fact, involvement in commerce. Non-commerce is commerce, you see. And darkness is light, and la de da.) A full four columns of wanna-be tyrants ramp up the assaults each day. Think NDAA and the Utah Data Center, and feel the tank wheels shaking the ground. These forces find a Fifth Column here, waiting to assist them.

That Fifth Column is an ill-taught Evangelicalism. As an Evangelical myself, this pains me.

A great swath of modern Christianity has been taught that Romans 13 gives the government a blank check, to do whatever it will, whatever it can get away with. When said government does these things, even things that violate the Constitution and the eternal laws of Divine justice, supposedly this passage of sacred scripture tells Christians to shut up and go along with it. To disobey the government, to resist its plans and actions, however outrageous, is to disobey God. The result is an Evangelical Fifth Column which has been taught to move aside and let tyranny pass on its way unimpeded.

Christian citizen, I beg you as a brother, not to become part of this Fifth Column. Find out what Romans 13:1-7 teaches. Hint: it doesn’t tell us to aid tyrants. I thank God that our Founders knew that.
