Carondelet, a private school in Northern California has apologized and removed a menu that apparently upset parents and students.
A lunch menu that was part of the celebrations for Black History Month was:
"…stereotypical of black Southern culture that comes from the same place where the N-word comes from," according to University of San Francisco professor James Taylor.
The menu, which included watermelon, chicken and collard greens was deemed offensive.
In an attempt to pacify their well-heeled students and their well off parents the school issued a letter to parents apologizing for their mistake.
I am left wondering if chicken, watermelon and collard greens are banned forever at Carondelet or just when they are associated with black culture.
Will turkey be deemed offensive at Thanksgiving? It does after all recreate a meal that did not embrace the full diversity of the United States. I cannot recall any mention of First Nation Americans being included in the festivities.
Maybe Christmas fayre should be avoided, there may be students who do not celebrate the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Cake would need to go if eating it coincided with Bastille Day…though maybe not, we are talking racism not xenophobia.
The level of political correctness in this great and diverse country of ours is getting to the point where common sense and even education is being stifled.
To the students at Carondelet, Black History Month will now be associated with a row over a lunch menu rather than concentrating on people like Rosa Parks who was instrumental in the black civil rights movement in the 1950′s.
History is not always a nice, neat parcel that many people would like it to be. By remembering history as it was we can see how far we have come, and we can make sure the mistakes of the past are not repeated. The over sensitivity of some groups does out children no service at all.
There are many who want our kids to grow up shielded, that would prefer to let their children have the sanitized version of the past served up to them.
Ultimately, this could be to the detriment of us all.Don't forget to Like Freedom Outpost on Facebook, Google Plus, & Twitter. You can also get Freedom Outpost delivered to your Amazon Kindle device here.
