Backdoor Gun Control: Obama to use Executive Order to Ban Lead Ammo Imports?

U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan's communications director told Joshua Cook, "we're very concerned and extensively looking into the lead issue."

After Congress defeated the Democrat led anti-gun bill this year, President Obama said he would use executive action to promote his gun control agenda. One of the executive orders signed by Obama prevents military-grade weapons from being imported into the U.S.

If the President can bypass Congress by using agencies like the EPA to shut down lead ammunition smelters, and stop lead ammunition imports by executive order, then you essentially have backdoor gun control.

AmmunitionAccording to the National Rifle Association (NRA), the only lead smelter in the U.S. is located in Herculaneum, Missouri, and owned and operated by the Doe Run Company. It has existed in the same location since 1892.

The Environmental Protection Agency is forcing the company to close due to the excessively emissions restrictions placed on the facility.

According to the NRA, Doe Run made significant efforts to reduce lead emissions from the smelter, but in 2008 the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for lead that were 10 times tighter than the previous standard.  Given the new lead air quality standard, Doe Run made the decision to close the smelter.

Allen West wrote that this closure is basically backdoor gun control because a gun without ammo is useless. questions West's main thesis that the smelter plant closure will effect lead ammunition, but for the NRA it's a big concern.

According to the NRA website, "At this time, it's unclear if Doe Run or another company will open a new lead smelter in the United States that can meet the more stringent lead air quality standards by using more modern smelting methods.   What is clear is that after the Herculaneum smelter closes its doors in December, entirely domestic manufacture of conventional ammunition, from raw ore to finished cartridge, will be impossible."

It's a big concern for Congressman Jeff Duncan's office too. U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan communications director told Joshua Cook, "We're very concerned and extensively looking into the lead issue."

Earlier this year gun owners experienced ammo shortages that sent ammo prices soaring. Duncan's office said that his investigation into the shortages is almost complete.

A shortage of lead used to make conventional ammunition is a big concern not only for gun owners, but also for law enforcement. While visiting a local gun shop in Greenville, S.C., Joshua Cook was told by the owner that local law enforcement was trying to acquire 9000 rounds, but couldn't because of ammo shortages.

For most Americans, cutting off the ammunition supply chain is not only a national security threat, but a serious threat to the 2nd Amendment and liberty itself.

We will investigate further into this issue and report new information as it develops.

You got that right he needs to be in a straight jacket..he is so stupid he is a danger to himself.

“It's a big concern for Congressman Jeff Duncan's office too.“
Extending the laws into dictatorial power SHOULD cause concern by all members
of Congress. Your Congressional representatives do not have the statistical chance of an ice cube in hell of assuming the power that they are bestowing on the relative few.
    Congress; Reign in the despots!

  • Walt

As long as our elected representatives in Congress continue to tolerate his flagrant abuses of power, there is nothing we can do. However, come next election many of those representatives should be packing and looking for a new job if we as a country are to survive. I say clean house and vote all those currently in office out of office. I realize there are some good ones there but they haven't screamed loud enough to get my attention so they need to go as well.

  • Grumpy old man

I think all shot gun shells can be reloaded - for Muslims pig $hit, for the government officials - "truth serum", if either is hit with this they will melt like the wicked witch of Oz. Just sayin'.

  • pearler

plastic works well for shotgun shells, aluminum, heck they used bullets made out of wood in the uncivil war;).
What was that line sam Elliot said in that movie ,we were soldiers? oH yeah,"when the time comes sir,if I need one there will be plenty of them laying on the ground";).
Worry more for food , shelter and protecting your children, if you think you and a gun will do anything to change this countries criminal elite. You are seriously mistaken;).promise.
VOTE,VOTE,VOTE and demand absolute verified proof of "natural citizenship ". You people need to realize that if these claims are true. They were set into motion years ago and are coming to the end with the results that were expected.
Another thought that is of interest is the federal reserves charter is up this month and we the people,of whom I am one need to stand and demand it not be RENEWED!!!
World changer folks, but all hell will break lose when we do;).promise.
Yes we can and no he won't!:).That simple,or not.

    • Walt

As far as shotgun shells go, you can fill them with gravel. Small pea gravel works well but almost anything you can stick in them will work.

    • pearler

      and cut shells.

    • Thomas Klein

Put democrat heads is them, there small and extremely hard ; )

  • Chicot

    Abolish the EPA...

  • John Patriot

Its a distraction folks, lead is everywhere and in everything. It is as important as copper. I think obomba chewed on too many window sills; his white trash mama should have warned him.

    • Shamas

Good point. If gun owners really want lead for making bullets, all they have to do is tear the copper coating off of pennies. There's lead under all that shiny copper coloring. Which brings us to another issue: How is the government going to make and distribute new pennies if they outlaw lead smelting? Duh! Yep...I have the sneaky suspicion, all of Bathhouse Barry's invented lead smelting issues will soon backfire on him since the US uses so much lead in many of our manufacturing industries and not just bullet making. Therefore, the best advice for gun owners is, buy up all necessary equipment you can for making your own ammo, then start collecting pennies.

    • Jim

In Wikipedia, I read that pennies are zinc, not lead. I also read that zinc fumes may be toxic, but i really don't know about that. You might want to check on both of those before you switch to pennies.

    • Shamas

Jim...I suggest you cut open a penny and look for yourself.

    • Jim

... and what will THAT do?? Hummm... a gray silverish metal is it zinc or lead? The first reason I checked the composition of pennies is that (as you know) lead is quite heavy and soft. I couldn't believe that the Treasury switched to lead and "no one noticed" that new pennies were considerably heavier. Do you mean to imply that this is yet another conspiracy and wiki is 'in on it?' If not, what's your point? Beyond that, as others have indicated the ENTIRE thread is moot as bullets use recycled lead - derived from car batteries, not provided by this smelter (Check the Blaze article - unless Glen Beck is also in on the conspiracy.). If the country does not have enough lead there won't be lead acid car batteries and suddenly the EPA would have everyone's attention.

    • Shamas

You obviously prefer to disagree with people more than you like seeking the truth. All I can suggest is, cut open a penny and look inside. See how simple it really is? Stop arguing until you actually know what the heck you're talking about, clown.

    • Jim

And (obviously) you prefer to attack anyone who points out the (obvious) errors in your post. Of course, you DO know what you're talking about because you've been sitting there cutting up pennies. Here's what Treasury says about the composition of pennies on their website - on a page discussing how it has changed over time, "The alloy remained 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc until 1982, when the composition was changed to 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper (copper-plated zinc)." Of course, they're obviously lying (is this part of some conspiracy?) because you're right, pennies are lead - after all, you have cut them in half.

But for a simple test that's just a bit more scientific than the 'cut the penny' approach, try this one. Cast some bullets from your "penny-lead" and cast some from a material that I would call "real-lead" that DOESN'T come from pennies. WEIGH them. See if your penny lead WEIGHS the same as real lead. As I said, it requires a bit more effort that cutting. And to quote, "Stop arguing until you actually know what the heck you're talking about." I see no need to call you names..

    • Shamas

Good Grief! I'm guessing now you are one of those types of person who will spends hours explaining the inner workings of clock anytime someone simply asks you for the time!

For cripe sake, man! Cut open a friggin' penny and simply look inside! What is it that you don't understand here??? It's not a difficult task...I promise!

    United States Constitution
Article 1 - The Legislative Branch
Section 8 - Powers of Congress

    To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

The President of the United States does not have the Constitutional authority to regulate commerce. And this is the oath that he took: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Sounds like there's a problem here.

    • catman

Do you actually think this acting POS POTUS gives a damn about the Constitution?
He is out to destroy it and this nation.

    • LittleRoot_48

That's exactly what I was going to say.

Alert Alert Alert Obama = Hitler. Withe Christians are the new Jews.

  • afanaglenn

I can't tell you how much I hate this sob.

  • Zabilde

This has been thoroughly debunked as any threat to our ammo supply. This plant does and did not supply any lead to bullet manufacturers. They use recycled Lead alloy not the highly pure refined lead this plant produces (mostly for the electronics and medical industries). The closure of this plant means lost jobs in that town and that's it. We still import plenty of lead from outside the country (where it is far cheaper to mine and refine). And those imports are not at risk. The green movement so loved by the left requires lots and lots of batteries. Those batteries wear out and get recycled producing all the lead the bullet industry needs.

This story broke nearly a month ago and was quickly debunked, then last week, the war criminal Alan West resurrected it and now everybody is freaking out about a non-issue. (Yes I called him a war criminal, his road-side interrogation was a war crime but due to his rank he was allowed to retire rather than be prosecuted as anyone of a lower rank would have been.)

This plant has been closed before and then been re-opened when lead became profitable enough to justify the cost of needed upgrades. This time their plans are to completely close it so that margin of profit would need to cover building a new plant.

And of course the kicker. The violations that prompted this closure, were filed by the EPA during the Bush administration, not Obama. Doe Run has been fighting it but, their battle through the courts against an action started under the Bush EPA was finally lost and so they are closing the plant. This will not impact the bullet supply, it was not an Obama backdoor attack, and can we please let this die already.

    • afanaglenn

He is going to stop imports of lead. That's already in the works. It has been deemed an environment hazard. And EPA thing. They don't need a law, or maybe even a numb nuts approval, Obama.

    • Keyboard Cowboy

Didn't John Kerry Shoot someone in the back? Now, he's SOS.

    • oliver

IT was more than likely BUSH hiding some where ..

    • 1marksman

You are right and wrong about the threat to our ammo supply. Our ammo is largely made from recycled lead so you are right about the direct threat to our supply. However with the last smelter shut down the supply of lead to recycle will dry up as well as there will be an increased demand for the recycled lead. This will affect both the supply and the price of ammo. It is also a national security issue as we will no longer be able to supply our industries or our military with the lead we need. Obama is doing the same, thing using the EPA, with lead as he is doing with coal. If you are not aware about 70% of our electric power is generated by coal fired plants. The ability to replace that much power with green energy does not exist. thus driving up the cost and availability of power. These policies are a danger to our independence as a nation and to our freedom. In case you didn't know about 300 coal power plants have already been shut down and hundreds more will have to shut down by 2020. Many have to be shut down by 2016.

    • LittleRoot_48

It would appear he's trying to shut the entire country down, one executive order at a time. We might as well save money and eliminate Congress altogether. They are about as useless as teats on a boar hog.

    • catman

You , of course were present when Lt. Col. West was alleged to have committed this so called "war crime" I suppose.
The remainder of your comment is what I have also heard from a bullet manufacturer.
It really makes no difference which administration this action was started against this company. It remains just another EPA tyrannical act against an American industry. The EPA was granted far too much power when it was first organized, I believe, under Jimmy Carters administration, (could be wrong there).

    • Shamas

If Col. West...or any of our military personnel for that matter ... kills an enemy combatant during a time of war, he/she is an American hero....not a criminal. It doesn't matter the circumstances. Our Military personnel have been highly trained to perform the duties of soldiers....which means their job is to kill people and blow stuff up.They aren't trained police officers and should not be expected to perform in such a capacity. For some perverted reason, however, the US Government and many US citizens are deceived into thinking our US military are being sent to Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, as Peace Keepers and law enforcement officers. Truth is, all our military personnel want to do is, kick some enemy butt, win a war, and then get home to their families as quickly as possible. And rightfully so.

    • Thomas Klein

ATTENTION, ATTENTION, ATTENTION Blame it on Bush alert # 4,786,378 and counting.................

  • Jude O'Connor

I remember when we had tooth paste in lead tubes and lead icicles to hang on Christmas trees. We all used both items but the government thought we had babies chewing on baby cribs painted with lead based paint. Amazing!

  • me

copper jacket cast iron. OUCH !

    • afanaglenn

    • oliver

Why not really hard plastic copper coated??? would do about the same as would get hot just like lead and make a hole also..just like lead..

  • kissmyass

a lot of armor piercing bullets are copper jacketed with a steel core. not sure if any lead is involved. but I believe these are banned also. believe me there will soon be a run on lead you can't imagine.

    • Defend 2nd Amendment

Bullets containing a steel core rather than lead do not contain any lead component. That said, these bullets are designed for improved penetration at long distances but are not armor piercing. These steel core bullets are not banned and are available on the open market.

  • Tom Hammond

what can bullets be made of if not lead? copper-jecketed kevlar or carbon-fiber?

    • catman

I have some that are pure copper. They shoot well and are very accurate and no leading of the barrel. Do they exert undo wear and tear on the rifling? Don't know yet. Maybe someone with more expertise than I can answer that for us ???
