New Mexico State Police Pull Woman Over In Routine Traffic Stop, Fire Shots At Vehicle With Five Children Inside

Who is going to protect ordinary citizens from police brutality? In an outrageous display of unnecessary brute force, a New Mexico State police officer pulls a woman over in a routine traffic stop. Then the unthinkable happens. The woman gets back in her car and drives off instead of turning off her car. The officer pulls her over again, calls for backup, and the officers of the law start acting like gangsters. Is America turning into a police state with officers being the ones people should fear the most? Absolutely, and this video is proof of it.

Screen-Shot-2013-11-17-at-11.45.50-AMNew Mexico State police officers have been suspected of questionable and outrageous behavior recently. Reports of anal probing in a search for drugs that never materialized surfaced, and even worse, the man who was "suspected" of this was forced to undergo X-rays, enemas, and a colonoscopy. There is no question that police officers are turning violent, aggressive, and abusive. When routine traffic stops turn into shoot outs, this is definitely a sign of serious abuses by law enforcement officials.

This was supposed to be a routine traffic stop, nothing more, nothing less. No doubt everyone who has had a driver's license for any length of time has been pulled over. Oriana Ferrell was allegedly driving 71 miles-per-hour in a 55 mile-per-hour zone when an officer pulled her over. As indicated by the dash camera, it was early afternoon on October 28th when the traffic stop occurred. Ferrell should have gotten a ticket and then have gone on her way. Instead, a routine stop took a terrifying turn.

Things escalate when Ferrell does not comply with the officer’s order to turn off her car, but instead chooses to drive off.

She pulls over again and the infuriated officer immediately demands she exit the driver seat and step out of the vehicle.

Why she drove off isn't exactly clear. This occurred just south of Taos, NM, and when the officer pulled Ferrell over again, he started screaming and using force to get her out of her vehicle. This is when the video gets truly frightening. All of this over a $126.00 fine. However, as the officer yells at her to get out of the vehicle, the scene turns chaotic, and the woman's children start to panic.

In the dash cam video, you can hear her children yelling for the officer to leave their mom alone and get off of her.

At one point Ferrell's 14-year-old son gets out of the minivan and starts walking towards the officer, but the boy thinks better of it after the officer draws his Taser and points it at the boy. He gets back in the van while the officer continues his struggle to get Ferrell out of the minivan.

Screen-Shot-2013-11-17-at-11.46.26-AMThe fact that the officer drew his Taser and was points it at the 14-year-old is a major red flag. The young man did not do anything to suggest he was going to harm the officer. If anything, he was simply trying to protect his mother. But he didn't have time to get around the front of the van when the officer drew his weapon. From here, it continues to escalate.

Look, I’m going to ask you one more time to get out of the vehicle and then I’m going to pull you out, OK?” the officer said. “You’re already facing evading charges. You ran away from me.

Sir, I pulled back over, I didn’t run away,” Ferrell responded. “You see my children. I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m just trying to take them to the Rio Grande.”

Ferrell rushes back to her vehicle after the officer tells her to turn around. Then a struggle ensues. The woman's son tries to intervene again.

That's when her 14-year-old son gets out of the car again and rushes the officer. The boy and the cop have a short tussle. The officer draws his Taser again while the boy runs back into the minivan and closes the door.

The worst is yet to come, as several New Mexico State police officers arrive. The officer called for backup to get control of an incident that never should have occurred to begin with. The violence that ensues would never be necessary unless the officers were involved in a situation with armed criminals. This was a traffic stop involving a woman and her children.

As one officer starts smashing the vehicle’s windows, the mother once again takes off.

At this juncture, one officer can be seen on video firing shots at the minivan.

The mother reportedly then led police on a high-speed chase before finally surrendering in front of a hotel.

Why would the officers start shooting at a van with five children inside the vehicle? This is outrageous. This is police brutality at its worst. If this is the new American police state, everyone should be worried. There are no rules. Cops can brutalize anyone whenever they please. Even at a traffic stop.

Oriana Ferrell and her 14- year old son were both arrested. Ferrell was charged "child abuse and fleeing charges." And Taos Police Department officials also say she had drug paraphernalia in her possession. Did she really? At this juncture, one has to question these charges. It appears the police can trump up any charge they want.

The family is reportedly from Memphis and was visiting New Mexico on an educational trip.

The only education one could receive from this is the knowledge that you can't trust police officers. They're the thugs in a police state.

This is not frigging Hollywood. Anytime someone shoots a gun at or near you, it does not matter what their intent is. You are in danger. That bullet once shot does not care what direction it goes in. It can bounce. It can shatter. It can penetrate metal like a knife through butter and it is hot. Those five bullets could have bounced off the road, entered the floor and killed one of those children, or they could have hit the steel of the tires shattered and went through the floor. They could have hit the gas tank, caused a leak and fire. That cop was nuts to shoot at that car full of children whether the mother drove away or not. They know how to stop a moving vehicle with their cars. They are trained to do that. Now the cop will probably get rewarded with a paid vacation for shooting at a car full of children.

I'm normally wary about police who overstep their authority but in this case the woman chose to escalate her situation. It didn't help that the second police car parked in the opposite lane, allowing her to drive away. I think this is a case of dumb and dumber.

I don't know why she acted like such a nut, but the fact is she was only trying to evade a traffic stop/ticket, she was posing no threat to the officers or the public, so there was really no reason for the police to go off like a buch of thugs. They have her plate number, vehicle description and police radios. She could have been picked up at any time, safely and peacefully. Very un-professional, but what's new?

The woman is to blame. She should not have driven off. But the brute force was inexcusable, but anyone would have been arrested for fleeing, and the son was also
wrong for going after the officer. I watched this video several times.

I am totally against police brutality, but this woman just drove off after the officer
asked her to turn off the car. She refused and drove off. Then acts like she
did nothing wrong. She was fleeing so naturally he was angry. But the brutality
    was not necessary.

As for the thug son, he looked like he was looking for a fight. It had little to do with
protection his Mother. He was going to buck authority.

The separate issue is the cops shooting into the car. They should not have done
that, but this looks like it happened near the border & I'm sure they have to deal
with Illegals a lot. All of this could have been avoided if the stupid woman had
just turned off the car and waiting for her citation.

I think there is more to this story

The dumb womans fault! The cop should have tased her after warnings to comply. Would've been end of story. A good portion of cops in this country are nothing but terrorists n sh9uld be thrown in prison. Put them in a cell unguarded with the worst prisoners let them take care of them

  • MrLogical

Take the ticket and either pay it or go to court and fight it. That's what 99.99% of people do when they receive a traffic citation. In most cases, if you have a clean driving record, the asst. prosecutor or some other officer of he court will let you plea to a lesser charge just to avoid tying up the court, or allow you to make a voluntary donation to some local charity. This entire episode is the fault of the woman who willfully chose to become a fugitive from justice.

You wasted your time on this one Ms. Brock.

From what I saw on the video - I am on the side of the officers. It appears that the officer was NOT shooting at the back of the van but the tires. That can be surmised by the fact that not one bullet shattered the back window and no one was hurt. One could say the officer was trying to prevent a high speed chase which would have put the kids in greater danger. The 14 year old should be arrested for interfering with an officer. His mother was not in danger - the officer had done nothing to her. The mother should be charged with endangering her kids by fleeing. WHY...WHY...did she flee??? It was a stupid thing to do! And THAT was the cause of everything after. She caused it.

The whole incident is another proof of ZERO tolerance in America. Cops are the law, the judges and the executioners. This is not what a free and compassionate country is supposed to be. It's just not right. Europeans are civilized. We are not, yet.

    • W_R_Monger

Have you been to Europe lately? I have friends who live there and say that it's getting pretty unruly since the "invasion" (from the mid east). Civilized? Nah...

    • Guest

Yes, I have lived in Europe for 5 years. Cops were my friends. I always felt safe around them. My father in law was a general of the Chinese Army who retired in the US. He had known a lot of bloody killing during world war II. He knew about killing far more than you. Yet, he said once, "in the rest of the world you can reason with cops, you can't do that in America". Think about it.

    • W_R_Monger

I never said American cops were better I said Europe is no more civilized than we are. Since the muslims have been invading the civility in Europe has increasingly declined. I was recently in London and you could feel the outward hostility as "they" walked by glaring at everyone from under the sheets on their heads.

    • gotham1883

The cops in the cities have been programmed to treat everyone like the enemy. It is how they act. It is who they are. You do not reason with your enemy. You either beat them or they beat you. It is also why when the SHTF the police will be your worst enemy and should be avoided at all cost or treated like any other thug with a gun looking to rob you.

    • Dasrge

You must not have gotten to Germany (especially Southern Bavaria) during the late 80's and early 90's. The German Polizei would beat you without hesitation. I saw it a number of times.

  • Ltpar

Have to admit, it looks pretty bad at first glance. While the driver obviously committed several violations in creating a high speed pursuit, it most certainly could have been resolved without the use of deadly force. It would also appear to an outside observer, the continued incidents of the New Mexico State Police demonstrate both a void of leadership in the organization and additionally their Training Program needs to be overhauled. This could be an interesting case for the media to hold the State Police's feet to the fire on and determine what, if any discipline was given to the Officers.

technically the woman was under arrest and escaping at the point , shots were fired.......whether it was good judgment to have done so is another question. This story has baited many who have read it to respond in a reactionary manner....the news station is being biased in their relation of it in their verbage choices . the video representation clearly shows a resistance and combativeness to detention and detainer...as well as combative aggression towards the lone officer which creates additional uncalled and undue recklessness to a situation unnecessarily , coupled with the 100 mph fleeing ..by the motor vehicle operator the woman shows additional disregard to the safety of her children and general public......a follow up reading of the court appearance from the paper adds little more to her defense....I think the officers except in firing the shots exercised relatively normal restraint and I am not one to condone brutality excessive force or oppression ......having been victimized by such myself.
