Rural Coloradans Vote to Secede from Colorado as 51st State – Cite Sweeping Gun & Energy Laws

Commissioners in Weld County, Colorado unanimously voted on Monday to make 'North Colorado' the 51st US state. The Republican board hopes to secede from the state in protest of laws passed by the Democratically controlled state legislature this year. The initiative will be added to the ballot this November. More than 11,000 people have liked the 51st State Initiative's Facebook page.

The 51st State initiative has a website and appeals to the Declaration of Independence as justification for its efforts, writing:

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

The 51st State website claims that their initiative is simple. "We just want to be left alone to live our lives without heavy-handed restrictions from the state capitol," read a post on the website.

"The concerns of rural Coloradans have been ignored for years," William Garcia, chairman of the Weld County Commissioners, said in a statement. "The last session was the straw that broke the camel's back for many people. They want change. They want to be heard."

The Washington Times reports:

Three other rural counties — Cheyenne, Sedgwick and Yuma — also plan to place the 51st state referendum on the fall ballot. "At least three more counties plan to consider the proposal this week at their commission meetings," said Jeffrey Hare, spokesman for the 51st State Initiative.

Known for its agriculture and oil and gas production, Weld is the largest of the Colorado counties exploring a break with the state after the legislature's sharp turn to the left with bills restricting access to firearms and doubling the state's renewable-energy mandate for rural areas.

Forming a state isn't easy: Even if the ballot measures pass, the Colorado state legislature would be required to amend the constitution to configure the state's borders and refer a request for a new state to Congress.

Approving a 51st state would require a majority vote of both houses of Congress, although the Constitution doesn't require the signature of the president, Mr. Hare said.

In responding to the issue of forming a new state, the 51st State website responds, "Will statehood be easy?  No.  However, pioneers are who have made this state great.  Those early miners that came for the gold rush were pioneers.  The early settlers that began farming the land and built the infrastructure to enable Colorado to be an agricultural powerhouse - they were also pioneers."

Those in favor of the break with the State of Colorado see a growing divide between urban and rural interests and have put forth three proposals:

  1. The creation of a new state
  2. A change to the representation of the State Senate - the Phillips County proposal (details here)
  3. Requesting annexation into WY - more on this option will be forthcoming

It seems that what they will be doing is giving the state legislature and the liberals in power in Colorado the dependents they have created in the urban areas. It will be something of a poetic justice.

"We're not pulling away from Colorado, Colorado is pulling away from us," Keenesburg resident Bruce Sparrow told the Denver Post after attending a 70-person public meeting to discuss plans for a secession.

"I think people, when they feel disenfranchised, when they feel that their voices are not being heard, I think that's a problem in a representative form of government," Commissioner Sean Conway said.

Most of those who attended the July 29 meeting opposed many the policies that the state legislature has passed, arguing that the will of rural voters is not being represented. They oppose Colorado's gun control measures, renewable energy initiatives in rural areas, expanded regulation of oil and gas production, and the reduction of 'cruel treatment' of livestock. Rural voters are also angry with Amendment 64, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana.

Despite the meetings and commissioners' votes, some believe the secession effort is largely symbolic. No state has seceded since West Virginia pulled away from Virginia in 1863, but many have tried –especially after Obama was reelected last November.

In order for 'North Colorado' to secede, the plan would need the statewide support of voters, the General Assembly and the US Congress. But that isn't stopping rural Colorado residents from trying.

"If you're going to start walking on the people that give the government power, then they're going to start taking that power back," Frederick resident Travis Showalter told The Denver Post.

"They want change. They want to be heard," commission chairman William Garcia told the Washington Post. "Policies being passed in Denver are having negative impacts on the lives of rural Coloradans. This isn't an 'R' versus 'D' issue; it's much bigger than that."

I wish them well. Obviously the people of Colorado are fed up with a tyrannical government and are in this for more than mere "symbolic" reasons. May God bless their efforts and break the chains of their oppressors!

    I hope they succeed! I always wanted to move to Colorado until it decided it wanted to be like California.

  2. Protest song- My Country My Ass- I just updated the Colorado page for radio station requests, and added Facebook pages of radio stations. Get that song on the radio because "You're mad as hell and you aren't going to take it anymore"!

  4. This is great! We in Texas are working hard to get close to the same done here. Except, we want to just be free of the whole united States. She's a sinking ship, and we want off the Titanic. Colorado can have our star; although, I hear NY may be in need of a separate star, too... 😉

    The IRS scandal was all about tamping down the ground swell
    interest in the conservative approach Tea parties brought to the debate about

    The Hesitation Obama and the Liberals as well as
    some RINO Republicans even dabbled in with rhetoric that together with the
    stalling out of tea party organizations being able to create the financial
    platform to get their message out at the National level was stymied by
    the MSM and agencies within the Obama Administration that created a hesitation
    in the Message conservatives have for getting back to the core values of

    That along with the Federal Government expanding
    benefits that basically are buying support and votes , these things have all

    covered up and forgotten about because of the Buying of votes and support ,

    other cash Incentives is the Tea party offering . The Conservative message has
    always been work for pay work for opportunity and the chance to see terrific
    gains in financial freedom has always been the standard vision for striving for
    the American Dream .

    I think we are yet again at a point that the Tea Party
    needs to reinvent itself with a new approach to message building . The movement
    that’s rising up in states wanting to splinter off into their own states to be
    a better representation of Societies Voices is a great way for the Tea party to
    find avenues of participation to continue to fight for sustainable individual
    Liberty .

    Expanding the Voice with More representatives will
    give Competition to those other Representatives that seem to change their coats
    once elected and do not follow Constitutional principles . This is what is
    Needed to STOP the Consolidations of Power with Corruption that can’t seem to
    be broke up even with the current election cycles .

    Look how the last Election basically ended up with
    every house staying the same . This tells you that the Message the tea party
    was trying to get out at the national level was Squashed , and we know why ,
    and those corrupt people will not be stopped or we would have seen this happen
    by now on the national level .

    So take the message to the local level and allow the
    states to multiply the message is the only way to Go around this federalization
    that’s underway , to make change come back to a sustainable Freedom loving
    society who just wants to be able to access the properties of their country .

  14. If Obama and Congress are the "cancer" thats eating America from the inside, then its high time we have "surgery" and "remove the problem"! Whether by the knife, the sword, or the gun, it must happen before we die.
    We can all sit here and discuss the issues, but when are we getting off our as$@$ and doing something about it?? It won't heal on it's own!
    A word of advice...just something I learned from my Marine Corps days:

  15. Colorado is not the only state with grievances. It seems to me that it is about time that the Governors of at least 2/3rds. of the states call for a Constitutional convention and the US Congress and President will have no say over it. Any change has to be ratified by 3/4ths. of all the legislatures. With this initiative we could repeal the XVI (Personal Income) and XVII (Election of US Senators back to the states). This give a greater say by our states to control the federal government. Be able to downsize our bloated government. Bring our government back In line with the US Constitution as our forefathers had intended and as it should be today.

  16. But they really need to consult a language expert to correct the grammar in their declaration of independence. Ironic that I'm the one suggesting this . . . one of my ancestors was the consultant our founding fathers used to be sure their declaration of independence was in the best of the "King's English."
