For all of you out there poo-pooing the .22, here’s something you probably haven’t considered. A .22 is more likely to enter the body and “bounce around”, causing “meat grinder” type damage. While a higher cal round has a better chance of passing through the body, even rib bones. The Colorado Division of Wildlife shows a video in it’s hunter safety class that illustrates this in an excellent way. I believe it’s called “But it’s juts a .22!”

I agree, last time I saw records ,more people were killed by .22s than any other caliber, that may have changed but I was speaking more of the hi-powered weapons we would need to combat a gov’t assault similar to WACO. I rewatched a full Waco Documentary the other night, it gave me a revived hatred and contempt for joe biden and chuck schumer! The 22 long rifle is at best questionable self-defense weapon. However it is far superior to the 25 caliber APC and will do as much if not more damage than the little 32 automatic. Of the 22 does its damage is that when it goes in it has a tendency to bounce around a lot but as for stopping our it’s a very poor choice. For personal defense I recommend that my people and students nothing smaller 380 and only then if they have sufficient practice to be able to hear what they’re shooting at when under pressure.

Depending upon where you live if you’re in a northern climate during the winter I wouldn’t want anything under 357 Magnum well I myself prefer 45 APC in northern climates in the winter never use hollow points. Hollow points to get hung up in some of the darndest things went down this especially in conjunction with leather coats.

For home defense I insisted that my wife and my children with their families use a shotgun. Preferably a 12gauge that is set up for home defense. As a gunsmith my father and my wife’s gun are side-by-side 12gauge with number six number four birdshot. The reason being you don’t want over penetration inside a house or even more so inside an apartment. At the ranges you will find in most homes that birdshot is all you need and will penetrate and kill people in the next apartment.

when I was stationed in South Carolina in the Navy there is a Marine at the base that was working part-time at a gas station. He was held up one night and was shot nine times with a 22 long rifle. After the people left he locked up the station and walked half a mile to the owner’s house to report that he had been robbed. In surgery they found eight slugs they could not find number nine so assumed it might have exited. Three months later he went to sick call with a pain in his lower leg. The ground night slug it traveled all the way down from his chest cavity down into one of the names in his leg. The 22 is better than a 25 only because it bounces around more inside. I would take either one over nothing but that’s not saying much. That’s talking about a carry with. In the home is absolutely no excuse for having such a mouse gun.

One needs a “well rounded” assortment of firearms for specific purposes. Just as a craftsman has specific tools for particular jobs. You wouldn’t trim out a door/window with a sledge hammer. Nor would you use a trim hammer to break up a concrete slab. You wouldn’t attempt to hunt pheasants over dogs with a .22. Unless your last name was Oakley. Sure a .22 can be a useful self defense weapon. It can also provide you with an ample amount of “bushy tails” for a marvelous stew. But an AR-10 National Match is a better choice at a distance and a Para Ordnance P14 for up close. But NOTHING beats 12 gauge pump for home defense. It’s all what the “craftsman” is skilled with. They are after all just “tools” for self defense and subsistance.

This kind of nonsense gets people killed. Have you read the recent story of a mother saving her children after shooting a burglar 5 times with a .38 special? The burglar survived being shot, and even limped to his vehicle and attempted an escape. Folks, if a man can take 5 .38 special rounds and keep moving, a .22 is not even in the realm of reasonable self defense use.

This whole myth comes from the same people who will brag about poaching deer with headshots with a .22lr. These same people will not tell you about the 19 deer they injured and not killed with using an inferior cartridge. People seem to think shooting a man in self defense is the same as killing a squirrel, and it is not so. Men on drugs, and adrenaline, do not care about pain, and sometimes only a disabling blow or a lethal shot can stop them. The .22 is not reliable for either.

I am a shooter, and I know what a .22lr pistol can do. It cannot penetrate much, not nearly as much as these youtube videos can claim, and the bullets tend to stop, deflect, or explode on bones and other hard objects. I would never advise anyone to ever consider using a .22 to defend themselves in any situation, a knife, a baseball bat, anything is better then a cartridge that can hit a man a dozen times and not put him down.

a well placed .22 will put any man down… if you’re gonna have a gun any gun, learn how to use it. Most confrontations are closer than 10 feet. A .22lr placed is very effective, cheap to shoot, light to carry, not much noise. A 12 gauge is not always handy.

Most fights are under 10 feet, yes. That means you don’t have all day to take careful aim at a standing target waiting to be shot. You have a moment to hit the target, if at all, far from the ideal of good shot placement. This means you have to shoot quick, only get a few rounds, and you can’t always guarantee you will hit a lethal spot. Thus, why you should always carry a round that can do damage enough to stop someone if it fails to hit a lethal spot. A .22 that doesn’t hit an instantly lethal artery, heart, ect. will fail to stop a determined attacker at all.

The 22 is not very effective at all. It is stopped by heavy clothing and leather jackets, known to fail to penetrate any type of bone, and not stop an attacked it does NOT KILL instantly. A heavier pistol can actually disable a man, pierce clothing, break bones, ect. The ..22 can hit a target and fail to put him down, this makes the weapon a failure.

Any man who thinks an enemy at close range will allow him careful time to place shots is a fool. Any man who relies on a weapon that can’t kill or disable an enemy unless under perfect conditions is a fool. A man choosing a weapon that inflicts minor damage if it fails to kill is a fool.

The greatest loser in warfare, is the man who overestimates himself, and underestimates his enemy. Any idiot who thinks a .22 is going to protect him underestimates his opponent and conditions, and overestimates his own marksmanship and ability. Always take more then enough weapon, always respect the capability of those who are your enemies. The .22 is a weapon of arrogance and contempt.

Generally speaking, the .22 round can do far more damage than most people realize, simply because of the fact that when it enters the body it just keeps traveling, and can end up anywhere. It’s biggest problem is it’s lack of “knock-down” power, which is so crucial in close quarter combat/self defense situations.

You make a good point. There have been cases of a .22 actually bouncing around inside a skull causing more damage with every change in trajectory. Knock down power is more formerly known as a transfer of kinetic energy and the .22 just doesn’t have the properties to deliver there. Unless you are tasked to have armed confrontations(i.e. military, law enforcement and personal protection) there is absolutely no way to know what kind of situation you may find yourself in. Therefore, you should carry what you are most comfortable and compitent with and has good capabilities in most situations.

I agree. You can put alot of rounds on target without recoil. Key to any weapon is that you need to be comfortable with what your shooting. A 357 or 45 has a heck of a recoil and tough to stay on target. A 22 is great..

A 357 or a 45 can break bone and are very likely to put people down within a hit or two. .22 ‘s have been known to bounce off bone and fail to put people down after half a dozen ore more bullets. People who think an attacker is a static target that sits and waits to be shot in the heart or the head are mistaken, and if you fail to hit vitally with the .22 its virtually useless.

Actually, if you shoot the .22 jackets hollow point maxi, as I do, it has all the stopping power on the .38 special with none of the recoil problems. I love my maxi loads in my .22 revolver. I use it for putting down wildlife vermin like oppusums and the occasional raccoon raiding the hen house.

As a life long hunter and country dweller, I love the 22 caliber. 22 caliber weapons are all about shot placement and economy. Its the gun we use to kill our penned hogs for meat with,
as well as a whole variety of small game and pests eating our gardens. It will also do for self defense, if it has to. Many poor country people in the past have fead their families’ using a 22 rifle. The 22 is the first rifle for most country people, it allows them to learn to shoot safely, cheaply, doesn’t make a lot of noise and ammo is plentiful.

Davienne I have a 300 win mag for large game hunting, and wouldn’t hunt big game with a 22, But at close range a 22 would work. I have used a 22 to brain shoot a beef steer before at close range, and have seen other cows and many big hogs killed the same way with no problems. My favorite gun to hunt rabbits and squirrels with is a 22.

Well I spent years flying in Bush Alaska, and my favorite airplane gun that I was required to have by law, was a browning Auto 22, designed by John Moses himself. The thing would break down in two, and its short and light. Tube feed, I could carry it in my flight bag and 4 boxes of ammo. and I I had no problem collecting game when I need to do that to eat. My current favorite rifle is a Blaser R-93, its a switch barrel rifle, I got a 22 LR barre for it and its my favorite squirrel getter. And then there is that other thing, you can learn to shoot one and shoot one very accurately with a 22 LR.

The video is not correct. Let’s just take one little piece, and I’ll show you how it can’t be.

The argument is that in France, the French have a fertility rate of “1.8″ (the real figure is 2.01 in 2010), while “the Muslims in France” have a fertility rate of “8.1″. We know this cannot be true because firstly, the French Government is prohibited by its own laws to collect such information according to religious background, so the kind of information the video claims to have doesn’t exist. The French do, however, collect that information by country of origin. The bulk of Muslim immigrants to France come from only three countries: Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. Our own CIA notes that the fertility rates in those countries are, respectively, 2.78, 2.19, and 2.02. So the math doesn’t work to get to the fertility rate of 8.1 that the video claims. Perhaps you’d like to show how it does, but I won’t hold my breath.

This video is a great example of fearmongering disinformation, designed to frighten uninformed viewers.
