Barack Obama spoke for nearly twenty minutes on Sunday evening at a vigil for the victims of Friday's shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the midst of the speech, he vowed to take action in the coming weeks to prevent mass shootings like the one that occurred on Friday in Newtown, Connecticut.
“In the coming weeks I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from law enforcement, mental health professionals to parents and educators in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this,” Obama said. “Because what choice do we have? We can’t accept events like this as routine. Are we really prepared to say that we’re powerless in the face of such carnage? That the politics are too hard?"
“Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom?” he added, which was an obvious shot at conservatives who have spoken out against government gun grab legislation, defending the right to keep and bear arms to safeguard against tyranny.
While he did take time to praise those teachers who protected many of the children at the school, there is no doubt that he used the time to push a political agenda. While he did not call for more gun-control legislation by name, it was clear from his comments that he was showing his support for Senator Feinstein's bill that would ban "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines.
“Can we say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country, to give them the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?” he asked.
“I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is no. We’re not doing enough,” he added.
Really? This is supposed to be comforting to the families that lost children? The husbands who lost wives? The children who lost mothers? The President of the United States comes and instead of providing comfort tells them they just aren't doing enough to give the children in this country the chance to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose. Friends, I don't know about you, but I think I would have had some coarse words for a man that would come to a vigil and spout off his political garbage at me in the midst of my grieving. How bout you?
The Hill reports,
The president said he recognized the causes of violence are complex and no law or set of laws can stop all senseless killing in communities across the country. But he said if steps can save even one child or parent or community from tragedy, it would be well worth it.
“We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. To end them we must change,” he said.
The president said he expected political opposition to the course of action he envisions for improving the safety and well-being of children, an indication that he may attempt to move gun-control measures.
“That can’t be an excuse for inaction. Surely we can do better than this. If there’s even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town,” he said.
"We know that we can’t do this by ourselves. It comes as a shock at a certain point where you realize no matter how much you love these kids you can’t do it by yourself,” he continued. “This job of keeping our children safe and teaching them well is something we can only do together, with the help of friends and neighbors, with the help of a community and the help of a nation."
Keeping them safe? Is that what is happening by corraling them into government schools and declaring "open season" by mandating those schools to be "Gun Free Zones?" Is that protection? I'm just wondering if Barack Obama would set the example and declare the White House a "Gun Free Zone," remove the fencing and do away with the Secret Service. I'm guessing he won't do such a thing because that.....would be stupid! Yet, that is just what he and other liberals like him are advancing for the children of this nation.
Let me tell you, as a father of ten, giving up your access to firearms of any kind in this culture is stupid. It is not caring for your family or for the children of the country. It is foolish and all you have to do is look to history and it bears out what I'm saying. Barack Obama knows this and he and liberals will play on the emotions of those who are most hurt in times like these. I simply ask you, when the wolves attack children, do the parents cry out to be disarmed? I think not.
