I made you aware nearly two weeks ago that a former Marine Jon Hammar's arrest and being chained to a bed in a Mexican prison on trumped up gun charges. Now there is good news. Jon Hammar is reportedly set to be released today.
Hammar's mother, Olivia Hammar, has said that the judge that will be hearing Hammar's case has issued a ruling in his faovr and that her on is scheduled to be released on Friday at a time that has not been announced yet.
Hammar was arrested with a friend back in August and has spent his time in prison due to the fact that the Mexican police considered his rifle to be too long, in spite of the fact that it had cleared customs into the country. Hammar's friend was released shortly after the arrest.
A letter from Mexico's ambassador to the U.S. sent a letter on Thursday stating that Hammar's case would go to trial.
"This circumstance requires that he remain under detention during the duration of his trial," Arturo Sarukhan said in the letter.
This story is still developing and I'll update it as further information becomes available.
UPDATE: Hammar is back on US Soil!
The ordeal for Jon Hammar Jr., who languished under deplorable conditions in a violent Mexican prison for four months, is finally over.
Jon Hammar Sr. has confirmed that his 27-year-old son, a Marine combat veteran, is back on U.S. soil and with him in a rented car in Brownsville, Texas.
Hammar Sr. said his son was released from the notorious CEDES prison at 8 p.m. local time and made it back across the bridge between Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas by around 8:30 p.m.
