Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said that he believes the nation will go along with stronger gun control laws if Barack Obama 'exploits' the shooting that took place yesterday in Newtown, Connecticut.
Nadler told Ed Schultz on MSNBC's "The Ed Show," “These incidents, these horrible, horrible incidents … are happening more and more frequently. And they will continue to happen more and more frequently until someone with the bully pulpit, and that means the president, takes leadership and pushes Congress.”
Schultz asked the congressman if he though the shooting could be a turning point in the favor of Democrats to enact more gun control laws.
“I think we will be there if the president exploits it, and otherwise we’ll go on to the next incident."
Well, at least Nadler is being honest about what would have to happen. The President of the United States would have to "exploit" the murder or 20 children and 6 teachers in a school for some kind of political gain.
Nadler echoed the words of Obama's weekly address, which he gave on Friday. Obama said,
As a nation, we have endured far too many of these tragedies in the last few years. An elementary school in Newtown. A shopping mall in Oregon. A house of worship in Wisconsin. A movie theater in Colorado. Countless street corners in places like Chicago and Philadelphia.
Any of these neighborhoods could be our own. So we have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this. Regardless of the politics.
The "meaningful action" spoken of is simply more gun control laws, which will do nothing. In fact, it would be laughable if it weren't for the sad reality that Obama mentioned Chicago, which has some of the nation's most strict gun laws. Yet, their gun violence is astronomical. New York City's numbers on gun violence is very similar to Chicago.
I don't know that I agree with forcing people to own guns. I think that should be a free choice that people make, I do think that you see the results of mandatory gun ownership demonstrated in places like Kennesaw, Georgia, at least when it comes to homes.
Here's a thought. It used to be that in junior high and high school that kids were taught gun safety and how to actually use a weapon. They were taught morals and it wasn't a taboo thing to do so with the Bible. In addition to training and arming teachers and getting rid of the obvious failure of public schools known as "gun free zones," why don't we begin training students once again on gun safety and how to properly use a firearm, specifically using a .22 rifle and handgun. Why don't we begin teaching them the Ten Commandments and proper morals of how they are to deal with God and with one another? Oh that's right, that would mean we would have to abandon the idea that the State is God and secular humanism is our collective religion. If that is the way you think, then expect more of these incidents and more intrusive and tyrannical government.
