Are Stricter Gun Laws About Guns Or About Individual Rights?

Last night Fox News 19's Ben Swann takes on the issue of gun control laws following the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting and asks if stricter gun laws really are about guns? Or are they about whether individuals have rights.

So far we've seen the left call for more gun control, even declaring that there will be an "assault weapons" ban bill introduced to the Senate at the first of the year. But Swann wants to do something similar to what I wrote on concerning a comparison of guns and the American Medical Association.

Swann says the language being used by the left is pretty straight forward in that the claims are that we must get angry about what happened in Connecticut and that we must take action to see that it never happens again and that we need to be angry at guns. I ask you, as long as there are people intent on killing, will we ever stop shootings like this, and what good does it do to get angry at an inanimate object? Why get angry at the tool and not the user?

The main thing to do when dealing with a subject like adding more gun control laws that don't work is to separate out emotion from fact. Emotional reactions are normal, but often irrational and result in a typical "knee jerk" response. We need to be thinkers in this matter.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, there were 12,664 murders in the U.S in 2011. Of those deaths, 8,543 were caused by firearms. This means that 4,081 were committed without a firearm.

According to Swann, the thinking is that if there were stricter gun laws that these deaths, or at least many of them, would not have happened. He then asks, "But is that true?" Not necessarily.

"While guns are the most common tool used for murder, the second most common are knives and cutting objects," Swann says. "And the third, believe it or not, are fists and feet."

I don't hear anyone calling for knife bans or declaring that we must amputate everyone's hands and feet!

The bigger issue is if guns are so dangerous that we must rid our country of them, is tht true of other dangerous tools?

Swann points out that "while there are under 8,600 gun related murders" in the U.S. for 2011, there are over 11,000 drunk driving related deaths, according to the New York Times. This means that 2,500 more people are dying at the hands of drunk drivers than guns.

"Where's the outrage from Piers Morgan of CNN about legal alcohol for those drunk drivers?" Swann asks. "Where are the calls from Mayor Michael Bloomberg to have a debate about banning cars? After all, there are 38,000 traffic related deaths in the country each year."

No one is seriously considering taking your car away, though they are seeking to make them more expensive, less safe, and more like a Yugo. Swann says that people will say that the argument between guns and cars is apples and oranges, because you need a car to get to work and things of this nature. In their opinion, cars are used for a variety of purposes, but guns are only used for one thing. Both are untrue.

Ben points out that the difference between those who are pro-Second Amendment and those calling for a ban on what they term "assaault weapons" is a difference in worldview. Those calling for gun bans believe that the "greater good" in society would be served by removing guns, "even though the numbers show that the greater good would be served by removing all cars."

"The argument over guns isn't really an argument over guns at all," Swann points out. "It's over whether or not the individual in America has rights; rights to speech, rights to property, rights to keep and bear arms."

Swann says, "We hear a lot about sovereign states these days, but the truth is that, in the eyes of the Founders, you are the sovereign. You have rights that no society, no government, and even the 'greater good' cannot take away from you.

For another example of contrasting guns with something that leads to 98,000 people dying every year at a cost of $29 billion see yesterday's article.

  1. Wolf-Talker-! says:

    The curent line of thinking "Politically Correct" is that people must give up certain rights, if not all rights to be SAFE and SECURE and that it is the Governments job to protect everybody, everywhere all of the time. In the case of Newtown where was the Government? It is the Government and only the Government that knows what is best for the citizens of this Country! To this I say Hog Wash. When a citizen gives up their rights to the Government the citizen then becomes a SUBJECT and today too many citizens are all too willing to become SUBJECTS in the name of SAFETY and SECURITY! Our form of Government was not designed for us to be SUBJECTS, we declared our independance from this form of Government over 200 years ago!

  2. Regulating GUNS makes as much sense as mercury or antibiotics prescribed by doctors in 'western medicine' - (homicidal to pure life.) We're CALLED and even COMMANDED by God the Creator Yahweh who Dwelt among us as Christ the living Jesus - COMMANDED us to PRESERVE LIFE - saying THY shall NOT murder.... we are called to protect others, obligated to defend innocent life. So why would ANYONE promote Otherwise unless he was on the enemy of Gods side who comes to STEAL - KILL - DESTROY? Perhaps they are double minded and DON't Realize it - then REPENT --- research the Holy Scriptures to find out what they say as one voice, not cherry pick your minds eye - Yah's thoughts are not your thoughts.

    Remember promises made to God's peoples if ye shall serve יהוה (Yah) your Elohim (God.)

    Remember too promises of God to his people if they shall NOT OBEY יהוה (YAH) our Elohim (God.)

    Personal Self-defense is the last estoppel an individual has to preserve life, last in also being first... the Alpha-Omega of Righteous Liberty. Remember the sun shines on the just and unjust - but how are the fruit to grow up with the tares unless both are proofed together in the furnace of life?

    Remember also the history of the “sporting purpose”-USEAGE-idea which WAS-a-part of the Nazi-Regime.

    Psalms 149.
    5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
    6 Let the high praises of El (God) be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
    7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
    8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
    9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye יהוה (Yahweh.)

    TWO essential elements to this 'debate' should be weighed in consideration to the rationale individual. 1-Most people SUCK @ reading the Holy Bible, 2-Most people are in truth American's first and Christians LAST in this once Great Nation. Intellectual dis-honesty, decapitated reason, supplanted truth, elimination of Yah's-law, nutrient deprived (depraved) with infestation of leaven planted in the heart, watered by a soil-less
    society deceived by the adversary who dwells among us in our cultured immune deficient brains.

    LOVE, requires one to defend against all it's enemies. If your wife or daughter were being raped, and you had it within your capacity to load a gun and kill attacker or smoke signal 911 and you didn't stop the wickedness, you are PART of the problem... what kind of valueless love does your daughter and wife now hold of you - O TOOL of satan.

    Deuteronomy 5.17 You shall not commit murder.
    The secondary teaching here is - THY SHALL PRESERVE LIFE - so HOW can one obey that unless he has the TOOLS necessary to do so with a reasonable ability to succeed?

  3. If you look to the 2nd amendment for your authority to bear arms, the authority is contingent upon fickle nature of nine fallible human beings. On the other hand, because the responsibility to keep and bear arms is God given, no one except God has the right to withdraw or limit their use. If you are a Christian and particularly if you are the head of your home, you were giving the responsibility to keep and bear arms long before the ratification of the constitution. Ted Weiland, Bible Law VS. US Constitution pg. 49 (primer)

  4. Fred You are 1000% correct in your assessment, it is nothing to do with firearms and everything to do about controlling people. We don't live in under marshal law, YET, but if it did come to that, we will need to protect ourselves from the Government. The Second Amendment is very plain that my dog understands it and I don't even have a dog anymore. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!" What prat of SHALL NOT don't they understand. Oh and as a side note, if you happened watched the total stupidity, lack of moral fortitude, and the total witless wonder, you were probably watching the Piers Morgan Show on the Communist News Network. Morgans remarks were without common sense, or rational thought of any kind. Morgan has only been here for 6 years, his words not mine, and when I listened to him, Morgan attacked his guest and called him stupid and told his guest that his guest was happy with the massacre that happened in CT. That could was an out right LIE by Morgan in his bankrupt statements. People like Morgan and all the other Commucrat's need to be taken off the air. These people spill their garbage and they believe their own LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Excellent points!

  6. We currently have over the over 20,000 gun laws in this country. Not one of them has ever prevented a crime by an individual intent on creating havoc. As President Ronald Reagan said, “You won’t get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There’s only one way to get real gun control: disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you don’t actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time ... it’s a nasty truth, but those who look to inflict harm are not fazed by gun controllers. I happen to know this from personal experience.”

    It is unfortunate that liberal politicians believe (or pretend to believe) that the answer is to take weapons away from honest citizens, and do little or nothing halt or punish the criminal use of firearms.

  7. Actually the number one thing that kills the most people in the US is the AMA and that's not even including the unborn that they kill by the millions each year.I for one will never give up the right to protect myself and that's a fact.To unarm your citizens would sure make it easier to shoot them with out them shooting back.Facts aren't the truth anymore and when you point out that fact they think your crazy.No the people that shot home invaders and other crazy people are part of the related deaths that aren't be reported.To blame a tool or weapon of use then we have really got to check the sanity of the elected.Or is it that you can not tear up the constitution without first getting rid of the guns.HMMM I would vote for the later.Where are the facts that when their was a assault ban back in the clinton era,that it did any good, was there proof of less violence I think not.The problem is that the liberals feel that if their world had no guns it would be rainbows and butterflies.The truth is the utopia that you seek is not in the realm of reality just like the reality that when there is laws in states that forbid guns, it has the highest gun violence in the nation.We see your problem with reality so we should legalize drugs so you can feel safe in your drug induced stupor.The true reality is you are not safe anywhere and for you to not protect your own children by any means is criminal.OH that's right you don't really care about children because you would rather kill them with your right to enjoy your life without responsibility of another soul.Children will take away from your wants and needs like a big screen tv and you could just have the tax payers pay for the abortion while you go to the next black friday.What the hell happened to this world, is this what they call (forward thinking)?I feel like I woke up on the other side of the mirror.

  8. DAVID PEACOCK says:

    name one [1] thing the left libs advocate that ;"INCREASE YOUR PERSONAL RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES"??????

  9. It is another gov't witch hunt. It is about conrolling the gentleman Fred Palombi states in his comment ..............when they have the guns we will be defenseless against a rogue, illegal gov't.........that is out to destroy the USA. If we remember .........the forefathers put guns in our Bill of Rights for just such an protect ourselves from our gov't and other outlaws.

  10. I am so pleased to hear the opinions of the public that they are not buying the bs that the Left is trying to sell. Just stand behind your guns, pun intended, and do not waver from fighting for our rights. As one of the posters, Fred Palombi, has commented, "It's not about guns, it's about controlling the people." And I agree with him!

  11. Stricter Gun Laws Have Absolutely Nothing to Do with Guns! They call it gun control but that's not the control the government is after. They Want Total Control Of Every Human Being in America And to Do That They Must Disarm the American Public.
    This administration is on a rampage to eliminate as many human rights is possible. They want to control the Internet, they want to control communication in all forms, they want to curtail the free movement of American citizens, they want to be able to eavesdrop on every communication at any time without there being a legal reason, they already control our schools, they are 90% in control of our economy, and they're just getting started!

    They want to create a country where everyone who lives and breathes his beholding to the federal government for everything. The social progressives in our schools for years now I've been rewriting history, destroying the moral fabric of the family, destroying any sense of responsibility for one's actions, and basically turning out a program low intelligent robot that will do what the government says, believe what the government says, and gives rise to the old saying ignorance is bliss and boy do we have a lot of blissful young people.

    You don't need to look for crazy conspiracy theories you only have to look at the results of the things that are happening in our society. 30 years ago you never had mass shootings in our schools, you hardly ever had any trouble at all. It wasn't until the social progressives had got their foot in the door in the mid-late 60s that started the downhill slide of our young people starting primarily with the destruction of morality, the sense of responsibility, and respect for themselves and others. They were basically told that you have the God-given right to do anything you want no matter what anyone says and never fear any repercussions or punishment.( it feels good Do It!)

    We've always had crazy people and we always will and they have a tendency to sometimes do great evil this case in Connecticut is a very good example this young man was pure evil. It doesn't matter why what matters is that he did. The social progressives have to look for a reason so they can categorize it, file it, and point to something other than the fact of personal responsibility being to blame. That is 150% pure Bull! When our children were brought up and went to school to learn part of what they learned with self respect and a sense of right and wrong. They learned that if you did something wrong there was punishment if you did something right there was a reward. This is what the social progressives have destroyed now our children are no longer educated their indoctrinated into a nothing matters world and no consequences for your actions.

    So if you want to blame someone you start off by blaming this young man who committed the most heinous of crimes. There's very little that is worse than taking the life of a young child and we can only hope that he will spend eternity on the Devils barbecue. But the blame is not all his if you've been taught right from wrong in school the school would've found out early enough to have put this young man in a mental institution where he belonged long before any of these children had to die.

    I asked two things of all good Americans remember the families of the victims and the victims themselves in your first I know our hearts go out to them all and asked God to give them strength in some sense of relief effort all possible. Second I want everyone to take a real long look at how young men obviously this troubled could still be out walking around when if our schools and done their job is mental deficiencies would've been recognized much earlier and he could have been put somewhere where he wouldn't hurt himself or anyone else. Look to the people who destroyed our schools, who destroyed our moral compass and preached to our young people that If It Feels Good Do It.

  12. Not without a Real Fight this time Feinstein!!
