IRS Awards Whistleblower $104 Million

i7j6lSW9OJrMThe IRS is now paying rewards in order to catch people who commit tax fraud. A whistleblower named Bradley Birkenfeld “provided information on taxpayer behavior that the IRS had been unable to detect” in regards to a $20 billion offshore banking scheme.

Mr. Birkenfeld’s attorneys issued a statement in which they said,

“The IRS today sent 104 million messages to whistleblowers around the world — that there is now a safe and secure way to report tax fraud and that the IRS is now paying awards. The IRS also sent 104 million messages to banks around the world — stop enabling tax cheats or you will get caught.”

Birkenfeld was a former banker for UBS, which is a giant Swiss bank. His information led to fines of nearly $800 million, more than enough to warrant the compensation money he was awarded.

“The comprehensive information provided by the whistleblower was exceptional in both its breadth and depth,” the IRS said in a memo. “While the IRS was aware of tax compliance issues related to secret bank accounts in Switzerland and elsewhere, the information provided by the whistleblower formed the basis for unprecedented actions against UBS AG.”

The Washington Post reports,

The IRS confirmed the payment in a statement. The agency called the whistleblower law a valuable tool and said the award “reflects our commitment to the law.”

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, an Iowa Republican who has been a staunch defender of whistleblowers, said the award was well worth it for taxpayers.

“An award of $104 million is obviously a great deal of money, but billions of dollars in taxes owed will be collected that otherwise would not have been paid as a result of the whistleblower information,” he said. “Unfortunately it has taken the IRS nearly four years to settle this whistleblower case. If the IRS is serious about encouraging future whistleblowers, it needs to continue to honor the spirit and intent of the law and issue awards in a timely manner.”

Birkenfeld’s award is the largest every paid by the IRS.

Mr. Birkenfeld was also prosecuted because of his involvement. However, he has already served his time and was released earlier this year.

    UBS must be so proud.

Since the IRS is so above reproach and so perfect in its dealings with the American people, I assume that the organization feels it has the right to pay people to be whistleblowers. After all, Democrats pay people to vote for them!!! And does anyone audit the IRS to be sure that all of their employees pay appropriate taxes??

  • heidihoneighbor

The IRS allows illegal immigrants a tax return regardless of the fact that they didn’t pay taxes. The whistleblower in this case was involved with the crime, yet the IRS still took our hard earned tax money and paid him off. America is in deep deep trouble.

Wait until “it’s not my fault Obama” hears about this! The “Whistleblower” will probably wind up “owing” money to the government!

  • Chicot

When is the IRS going to collect back taxes owed by members of the administration and other employees of the government. That would come to millions more in the coffers…

  • ARMYOF69

The Swiss banking system is on its way down , down down. No one will ever trust them again.

So, he will get about $680K after taxes. And if it was after 1/1/2013, he only would have kept a little over $600K.

    • Toni

He probably won’t be taxed on it. He’s the IRS’s golden-haired little boy now.

So, first he hides the facts and when he finally decides he is going to “Spill the Beans” so to speak, he gets sentenced to Jail. I for one would like to know what the length of his sentence was. But wait, then he is released and is REWARDED WITH MONEY FROM OUR HARD EARNED TAXES, for doing what he should have done IMMEDIATELY instead of years down the line. WOW! How do I get a job like that one? Never mind, I am just too honest and the knowledge that I was hiding the truth would eat away at me. I couldn’t live with myself. Of course, I wouldn’t take a job like that in the first place. I’m just not dishonest and tough as nails.
