Social Security Responds To Bulk Ammo Purchase & Makes Case For Armed Citizens

In light of recent articles about ammunition purchases by the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration’s own purchase of 174,000 .357 Sig 125 grain hollow point bullets, the SSA decided to come forward with an explanation for why they were purchasing the ammunition.

The SSA’s Office of the Inspector General addressed the solicitation in a blog post on the agency’s website with the title, “Beyond the Numbers“:

As we said in a recent post, our office has criminal investigators, or special agents, who are responsible for investigating violations of the laws that govern SSA’s programs. Currently, about 295 special agents and supervisory special agents work in 66 offices across the United States. These investigators have full law enforcement authority, including executing search warrants and making arrests.

Our investigators are similar to your State or local police officers. They use traditional investigative techniques, and they are armed when on official duty.

Media reports expressed concerns over the type of ammunition ordered. In fact, this type of ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies. OIG’s special agents use this ammunition during their mandatory quarterly firearms qualifications and other training sessions, to ensure agent and public safety. Additionally, the ammunition our agents use is the same type used at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Our special agents need to be armed and trained appropriately. They not only investigate allegations of Social Security fraud, but they also are called to respond to threats against Social Security offices, employees, and customers.

The blog went on to say that they do have a high regard for employee and visitor safety:

As we explained in another post, SSA is processing more applications than ever, which means more traffic in SSA offices. Employee and visitor safety is the highest priority for OIG, which, together with the Federal Protective Services and local law enforcement, has jurisdiction over SSA workplaces.

So they did explain this without mentioning anything about qualifying, which some of my readers pointed out that they do annually and of this I have no doubt. Thus I posted that information on the preceding articles.

However, what I want to note from this is simply that the federal government is in effect making the case for citizens to be armed.

Our federal government assumes they will be dealing with people with guns, both at homes they may go to and at the offices in which they work. Why should American citizens not assume the same thing? Why should we not have the mindset that anyone we come in contact with just might be someone who is bad and intends to do us harm? I am one that does not trust government because they have demonstrated how untrustworthy they are.

I’ll accept their explanation with extreme caution, but I’ll also do likewise and purchase bulk ammunition as I am able. It’s just the right thing to do. After all I want my family, visitors, and home safe and secure. Thanks Social Security for making a great argument for the Second Amendment.

Its still sounds like a yon of ammo for a few investigators. Ok lets throw in ammo for security guards. They shoot quarterly which raises a question…When I worked for the sheriff’s office, we used to shoot quarterly but that was reduced to every six months to save money on everything from ammo, range time, range officers and paying for officers to take time away from their duties to train. So why is SSA still spending their money via the budget when road officers get less training but are in more danger everyday than a SSA agent?

If these agents are using the Ammo to practice with, How Much practice do these guys need. I would like to know how many investigators they have at the SSA! How much of this Ammo walks to someones home because they know what we do not.

“Thanks Social Security for making a great argument for the Second Amendment.”

The second amendment applies to citizens, not the government. The above is nonsense, in my opinion.

Well, did you expect the truth from a govt. agency? Why does the SSA need armed “investigators”, when there are city, state, local, and federal authorities to investigate SS fraud? And has anyone ever heard of them before? And another lie is that major law enforcement agencies no longer use the .357 weapons and ammo. Almost all have switched to the .9 mm.
I guess the folks over at the National Weather Service, who also purchased tens-of-thousands of rounds of the same ammo, are still trying to come up with an explaination that someone might believe. Perhaps a five year old, or a liberal.

“called to respond to threats against Social Security offices” hmmm, what future policy changes are making them nervous about people marching on their offices? Are they planning on doing something that is going to make a bunch of people protest?

  • ADRoberts

Most of the recepients of SS are elderly. Do these investigators, who probably NEVER make contact with anyone, Need KLL EM DEAD ammo.
There is just too much JUNK going on to not believe that something STINKS. Maybe they are investigating all those thousands who just got put on DISABILITY. LOL

How could any anyone believe this bull….. how sad that the federal government is getting ready to attack its own citizens. The ones that pay their salary and benefits.

How about the 450 million the Dept. of Homeland Security bought or the 45,000 the National Weather Service bought?

Since when do people on social security need to be protected by gov. officials brandishing guns?

as to the last part, agreed.
The second agreement is perhaps more important today than at any time since 1812 and during the American Revolution. Do not let it go quietly into the night. Our Republic needs each and every one of us. If not now, when?

Just be careful what you say. This just might be a trap to find out what type of weapon each of you have, so this administration knows exactly who has what.

A judge issues search warrents, not investigators. No matter which agency they are from. another power grab. Lock and load.

  • kbcab

If you are over 50 you should start buying all the ammo you can even if you don’t have a gun because even if you never get to use it will be worth more than you paid for in the future…

  • tom

i worked as an investigator (among other positions) for the social security administration and never carried or used a gun, nor did anyone else working there to my knowledge, either as an investigator or otherwise.

Alllllllll government is potentially dangerous to free people! I absolutely hate the prevailing idea that any and all government employees have the right to weapons of all sizes and destructive capabilities, the Second Amendment was not written into the Constitution to allow Americans to defend against just the average intruder, the forefathers meant explicitly for us to be able to overthrow government if government becomes oppressive and tyrannical ! I sincerely believe our “anti-american” federal government can be and should be considered tyrannical as they ignore the Constitution , picking and choosing laws to enforce according to ideological slants and dictatorially bestowing legitimacy on millions of foreigners!

  • ralphwylie

The Second Amendment doesn’t say that ‘Joe Citizen’ shall only be able to possess firearms and ammunition that is of lesser quality, restricted capacity or for only a specific use…….at least that’s the way I read it.
If it’s good enough for the gubmint then it’s good enough for us. After all, we are all part of the same militia, right? We have a right to defend ourselves and to possess so-called ‘Assault Weapons’ too (demonized name for semi-automatic rifles) and hollow point ammo in unrestricted capacity should be allowed in every home that wants it. Unfortunately, the anti-gunners have eroded these rights in some states. California gun laws as opposed to Arizona’s are a perfect example.
Vote accordingly. Vote Fast and Furiously.

There is too much fear mongering going on here. From what I am gathering there are many more in government positions who are preparing to fight some covert plans Obama has set up secretly involving possibly other governments who favor his agenda. The military and secret service do not like Obama at all. I feel they’re being quiet and neutral until the time comes to act and it won’t be against the people. It will be against the underground organizations and others who are supporting Obama. If and when the time comes to fight against these anti American movements the people must realize they need to aid the agencies fighting these groups who want to overthrow our Democracy. It does our nation no good if you start shooting at our allies. Obama wants to create the impression that our own government agencies will be against us. Don’t fall for it as well be fighting against ourselves instead of the real enemy.
