Here’s The Presumptive GOP Ticket

Though the word was out much earlier, Mitt Romney made it official of who his pick for his running mate will be this year. He announced Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan on Saturday. The two plan to make the nation’s spiraling debt a centerpiece of its attacks on Barack Obama.

Fox News reports,

Romney made the selection official during a campaign stop Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va., before launching a four-day bus tour.

The Republican presidential candidate called his new running mate a man of “steadiness” and “integrity.” Speaking Saturday morning, Romney praised Ryan as an “intellectual leader” of the party, one who understands the toll the debt is taking on the country but is optimistic about the future.

“He doesn’t demonize his opponents. He understands that honorable people can have honest differences and he appeals to the better angels of our nature,” Romney said. “He’s never been content to just curse the darkness. He’d rather light candles.”

Ryan has been held up as a leader in the GOP, especially after his budget was put to the forefront. But the facts broken down by CATO present that the Paul Ryan budget, while demonstrating less spending than Obama over the next decade, still needed more cuts in it to bring in a balanced budget. His budget also does not take into account the doubling of military spending, which Romney wants, and the $2 trillion it will cost over the next decade in additional spending. Ryan will also not even think of cutting military spending at all. CATO writes,

To summarize, Ryan’s budget plan would make crucial reforms to federal health care programs, and it would limit the size of the federal government over the long term. However, his plan would be improved by adopting more cuts and eliminations of agencies in short term, such as those proposed by Senator Rand Paul.

While Ryan favors tax cuts, and so do I, it is the spending that continues to not be brought into balance. He keeps Social Security at the level Obama does. He also begins to cut in other areas like Medicaid and Medicare. Cuts were applied to with other entitlements, which should be done and eventually eliminated.

The problem is that we, as a society, have entrenched in our minds that welfare must exist. When anyone tries to tamper with that they are demonized and the party good at demonization is the Democrat party. Ryan has already been demonized over the budget, which did make cuts, but they weren’t huge cuts in the big scheme of things. You can bet that the Democrats are going after those entitlement cuts and will have a field day with that. Personally I’d like to see the cuts much deeper and the budget brought into balance rather than continue in deficit spending. After all, I’m a conservative, and conservatives spend within their means, balance their budgets and cut taxes all at the same time.

As I previously wrote concerning Ryan’s proposal on healthcare,

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI.), the architect of the current Republican budget proposal, wants to make sure everyone is covered no matter what age or health status and is willing to use tax credits to subsidize the program. Those individuals that do not sign up for a plan, would be automatically enrolled in one when they seek care.

Ryan, like Romney, also supports the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), but unlike Romney he actually voted for it. This is the bill Barack Obama signed into law which allows the federal government to illegally (now legally) arrest Americans, detain them, ship them to prisons abroad indefinitely without trial, or proof, simply because they say they are a terrorist.

There are some problems with the choice,no doubt, but apparently this is what the establishment GOP is putting on the plate.

In any case, we’ll see just how Team Romney plays all this out.

  • IceColdTroll

I had some doubts about Romney and maybe he would not have been my first choice, but he is eminently electable, he is light-years of an advance on what we have now, and Ann Coulter vouches for him enthusiastically. I believe she noted somewhere that 4 years ago, Romney WAS being pushed as the “real conservative” alternative to McCain. NOTHING would dissuade me from voting for Romney, considering the alternative. NOTHING.

  • Silentio

You’re right about that , Pyrope, I also am not hearing from the oppostion what I had hoped we’d be hearing by now. With all of the nasty, anti-American junk coming out of Washington, one would expect to be hearing some political war drums by now.
Gee, the Republican party is looking pretty bleak this year. It looks like I shall have to be looking over the 3rd or 4th party offerings this next election. sad situation!

i’ve been around this old planet for 81 years. One lesson I took to heart is that although many political choices are Homeric Dilemmas, ponce the die is cast, make a choice then fight for it. Making end runs
around reality merely shades your decision toward a side you will hate in the morning. R & R are the only rational choice to rid ourselves of the thug group that is now destroying us. Reagan is dead, Eisenhour is dead, JFK and Truman are dead. Face reality and quit whining!

    To the unread,
Cato is The cato Institute. You might also read up on what the public now calls “The Holocaust Act” (the NDAA). No difference between it and the laws in NAZI Germany that (LEGALLY) allowed the military to snatch people on sight, without evidence, without probable cause, without charges, and without a warrant. They only need to be named by the powers that be, and may be killed on the spot, incarcerated secretly, and indefinately, or merely tortured to death, thus eliminating problem groups like Gypsies, Jews, or Tea Party members. Ryan voted FOR that.

    • http://FrontPorchPolitics.com/ Tim Brown

and Romney approves of NDAA by his own words

  • drummeriam

why cant we simply cut out all foreign aid, all aid to illegal aliens, all waste in government spending and all aid to countries that hate us. then we would have all the money we need.

  • Ron

I’m an “old people” and I ain’t scared of Romney I’m scared Obama will lead us into a revolution in America and it will be a blood bath . Mark my works Obama re elected and before the next 4 years are up the revolution will start .

Who the F is CATO? Sounds like smear lies like me. Just like Romney killed someone’s wife in the ad. Really …. you Demo liberal radicals need to stop before you fall on your faces from those huge Pinnoccio noses you are all growing. Especially true of Debby “blabber-mouth” Wasserman-Schultz. When she speaks, she makes even “The Nanny”‘s Fran Drescher seem like a Catholic nun. As for Axlerod and Reed, I think instantly lying creeps. Joe Biden+Nancy Peloci=wacky, rambling, big mouthed morons! How do these folks get elected anyway? Must be bribery and payoffs. P.S.–they are part of the 1% they keep talking about, yet they and their actor friends and the Prez keep saying the rich need to pay their “fair share” and they are willing to pay a little more … oh really … Then PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS I say!!!! Mr. Prez, you live for “FREE” — or should I say you live by “FREE-LIVING off the taxpayers”, that’s like the minister of a church asking for tithes, then not tithing him or herself! Mr. O, SHOW US THE MONEY BACK IN OUR POCKETS! Reed, Pelosi, what about waivers for your friends and business associates, and your states to not have to partake in ObamaCare. I say … NO WAIVERS … after all, if the little guy has to pay, why doesn’t Walmart and other Big Corporations, like GE have to pay proportionately. Personally, I’d like to see the Fed and IRS done away with, how many high-paying government jobs would this equate to, and be back into the system to take care of the real needy and elderly and handicapped. Better yet, use the money to find and prosecute ALL fraud in government, including users of the system, illegals, and government employees who like to Santa Claus friends and family. In NC … it’s big fraud. Food stamps are used for drugs, gambling, cigarettes … you name it! We need to send food stamps to school to pay for kid’s lunches, not encourage school boards to “Sign folks up” to get extra funding! It’s like that in health care also. Clinics are fronts for fraud–especially those run by liberal democrats. I know–I used to be a reporter covering school board meetings, town halls, county commissioner, board of elections, medical facility disputes–It’s big freaking fraud and misappropriation from the taxpayer through grants and loans (the citizens pay the balance of those loans too!) This is part of the bubble and crash, projects promised, borrowed for, grants received for but NEVER completed! Where’d the money go is what I want to know. Why should it take a very small town 10+ years to complete a water project? Grant money once … 5 years later … more grant money …. and the project ironically never gets completed, 100′s of millions of dollars later. And then that doesn’t address “cost overruns” by contractor (good ol’ boy network–kickbacks to mayors and commissioners, etc….) or “inflation”. Boy … don’t get me started! Ryan is the best choice, Mitt was right … for PRESIDENT! Maybe next time! But as VP for now … he’s OK by me started!!!

CATO is a conservative institution. It would be best if you knew of whom you speak before referring to people as demo libs:) Didn’t see one refutation of the facts though:(

  • 13amiga

Seriously? Paul Rino? Supported the auto bailouts. Supported TARP. Supported raising the debt ceiling. Supported the ‘Patriot’ Act. Supported NDAA. Supported CISPA. Supported using our troops in Libya. Supports a national ID. Need I go on?

So, who do you support? RINO Ron Paul or RINO Gary Johnson or the Communist Barack Obama?

    • http://FrontPorchPolitics.com/ Tim Brown

edward, rino? seriously? don’t remember paul backing any of those things above or any of the romney.ryan sttuf which is blatantly unconstitutiional. R/R are RINOS.

  • pyrope

Glenn Beck summed it up best when Romneycare became the presidential candidate: At least he’s not a communist.
I believe Mr. Romney is a decent, good, and smart individual, and I believe Paul Ryan is also a good and decent man, but I’m not hearing what I want to hear from them: CUT spending, CUT welfare, CLOSE the borders, send ALL the criminal aliens back to their home countries, get OUT of the Middle East, pay off the DEBT, close down ALL the government agencies that do not fulfill a CONSTITUTIONAL mission, BALANCE the budget, rewrite the 16th Amendment and replace the progressive income tax with a national sales tax, and get the US OUT of the UN.

    • http://FrontPorchPolitics.com/ Tim Brown

and sadly you won’t hear it either:(

    • Chic

We must first get them elected. Don’t want to scare off any old folks or people struggling right now. They’ve been made hollow promises, Once elected, they need to get to work right away, doing away with all of those Executive orders and killing Obamacare. The stock market will soar, people will invest again, businesses will be reserected, but times will still be tough for 10-20 years even if we have presidency and both houses working on the financials. Our ticker deficit is out of control.

  • Silentio

And what is the presumptive American Independent ticket?

  • noelle2011

CAN ROMENY HES FOR THE FOLLOWING? I DONT THINK SO!

    The Issues
The Constitution: Emphasizing and following the Constitution will mean a smaller less costly government, which is vital for the future prosperity and progress of the United States.

Jobs, the Debt and Deficit: Under the Obama Administration, unemployment has soared to around 8.5 percent. Our debt has increased by over 4 trillion dollars under the Obama Presidency, which has also given us trillion dollar deficits. The United States can not borrow its way to prosperity. It is incumbent on our next President to propose a balanced budget upon taking office and not ten years down the road. There will be pain, but the old saying that one will not get out of the hole by digging the hole deeper is accurate. Nearly every department and agency will face significant cuts and some will face elimination. Veterans benefits is an example that will not be cut. Examples of programs eliminated include the National Endowment for the Arts, No Child Left Behind, etc. Other programs and departments, such as Foreign Aid and Education, will be slashed and trimmed. Reducing regulations and becoming energy independent will also mean more jobs for America. The Canada to Texas pipeline needs to be built and operational expeditiously and not delayed or stopped as the current Administration is doing. Another way to reduce unemployment, reduce the deficit, and provide more jobs for U.S. citizens is to reduce legal immigration. In recent years about 1.2 million green cards have been issued annually and over 60% go to foreigners who come to the United States and take jobs from American citizens. I have proposed a moratorium (with a few minor exceptions) on issuing green cards until our unemployment rate is under 5 percent. America has one of the most liberal immigration policies in the world and it is time for the citizens of this country to be at the head of the line for jobs. We also need to totally end diversity visas (50,000 per year), reduce chain migration, and dramatically reduce asylees and refugees and their costs to the U.S. taxpayer.
Immigration: Illegal immigration must stop. Our borders must be secure. In Congress, I supported and cosponsored legislation to stop illegal aliens, terrorists, drug smugglers, and other criminals from coming across our Southern border. We need to utilize troops, fences, and other measures to stop the invasion from Mexico. I was the first to sponsor legislation providing for a fence along the Southern Border. We must continue to fight for funding and for adequacy of the fence. Illegal immigration costs the United States taxpayers billions every year through increased health care costs, social service utilization, emergency room fees,
prison expenses, and in other areas. For example, of the 189,000 federal prisoners, 50,000 are illegal or recent aliens costing the taxpayers millions
    of dollars for their incarceration.
We must end the anchor baby situation, whereby a child of illegal aliens is an automatic citizen of the United States.
Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants: I oppose granting amnesty for those persons who come into the United States illegally. Amnesty did not work in the 1980s. Amnesty did not work in the 1990s, and it will not solve the problem now. Amnesty only encourages more illegal entry into the United States. Legal immigration must be reduced not increased. Congress, the United States Senate, and the President need to adopt a position of a strong NO to amnesty. As President, I would immediately direct the Attorney General to support and NOT oppose the efforts of Arizona, Alabama and others to deal with the illegal problem in the states.
English as the Official Language: I continue to support English as the official language of the United States of America.
Energy Costs: The United States must be free of foreign fossil fuel. Freedom from the Middle Eastern sheiks, Nigeria, and Venezuela is necessary for a continued bright future for our country. We cannot allow OPEC to control our energy supply. The United States must develop its own resources and alternative fuel sources. Hydrogen, biodiesel, and other alternative energy sources have potential in making us less dependent on foreign fossil fuels. I also support the utilization of nuclear power and expanded drilling opportunities for natural gas and oil in this country so that our energy needs are met by domestic and not foreign sources. I have supported and will continue supporting drilling in Alaska and the continental United States. If President, I would support the drilling off our coasts where it can be done safely and where the states, such as Virginia, have passed legislation requesting offshore drilling.
Being free of a need for foreign fossil fuel will enable us to be free of the shifting sands of the Middle East.

Tax Reductions and Fairness: I support the elimination of the Death Tax. Death should not mean the end of the family farm or the family business. A death tax often precludes families from having the homestead or family business. I support and have voted to terminate the current IRS Code at a date determined in the future so it can be replaced with something simpler and fairer. There are several alternatives to the current Code and include the Fair Tax, the Flat Tax, the Transaction Tax, and others. Between the current IRS code and the Fair Tax, I would support the Fair Tax with certain modifications. For example, the Fair Tax, which is basically a national sales tax, has a prebate of $180 per month per person, which should be limited to United States citizens, who are adults and who reside in the United States. I would support a Fair Tax only if certain other taxes, such as the Death Tax and Income Tax were eliminated. If the Income Tax were to be retained, then I would oppose a national sales tax and have a simple flat rate income tax and scrap the current code with its inequities.

Medical Costs: A big factor in medical costs is the high cost of malpractice insurance for our physicians and other health care providers. I support tort reform that will limit attorney fees and the amount of damages recoverable for non-economic losses.
Social Security: We must preserve and protect Social Security. Social Security is owed over two trillion dollars. Social Security should be repaid and have real money in the Social Security Trust Fund and not IOU’s.
Marriage: I believe that marriage should be a union between a man and a woman. I am opposed to gay marriages and so-called gay civil unions. I support the federal Marriage Protection Amendment.
Health Care: I support ending Obamacare.
Public Education: Washington should not be running our local school systems. We need to leave local education decisions to the states and localities. I am opposed to national testing of public school students and voted against “No Child Left Behind” with its new mandates and new tests that must comply with national standards. I support ending the federal Department of Education.
Crime and the Second Amendment: We need to maintain capital punishment for certain murders and to fully prosecute those who commit crimes with firearms. I fully support the right of an individual to protect himself or herself against assault and violent attack. I was honored to be co-chair of the Second Amendment Caucus during part of my tenure in Congress.
National Defense: We need a strong national defense. However, reckless federal spending which has given us a deficit in excess of one trillion dollars necessitates cutting defense spending. We must now come home from Afghanistan and reduce our expenditures around the globe.
Veteran’s Benefits: I support funding for veterans’ health care and providing health care benefits to all veterans. We also need to insure that the Veteran’s Administration works with and on behalf of our veterans.
Abortion: In the United States House of Representatives, I had a consistent pro-life voting record and in 2008 the National Right to Life Political Action Committee commended me “for your 100 percent pro-life voting record throughout your twelve years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives”. As President I would continue to oppose abortion and would submit a budget to Congress with zero funding for planned parenthood and any other similar entities.
International Relations: I oppose the placement of our Armed Forces under United Nations command. We need to curtail expenditures to the UN, the World Bank, the IMF, and to foreign nations. Our sovereignty, in my opinion, should always be paramount. I also vigorously oppose Agenda 21 and other globalism schemes so harmful to the citizens of the United States.
North American Union: We need to block any union between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The sovereignty of the United States must be preserved. In Congress I sponsored a resolution against the North American Union.
Trade: Agreements like NAFTA and the trade provisions in fast track authorization lead to the erosion of this country’s vital manufacturing base. I do not favor international trade agreements such as these that result in a loss of American sovereignty and jobs.
Term Limits: Term limits for members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate are necessary for a Congress more responsive to the needs of our country and its citizens. Many members focus too much time and attention on raising money for the next election. Term limits will result in members caring more about the general good for the county. If elected President, I will serve only one term and not focus on raising money and getting votes for the next election. The country shall be first.

Don’t attack our Constitutional rights. You are not required to read long comments. If you want to be extra brief, then TWEET! As a former newspaper reporter, it takes more than 20 words to express fully what you mean sometimes. But … again, it’s your right to say you don’t like long comments. As long as we stand together against socialism, Marxism, racism (reverse) and tyrany in November, that’s all that matters. A.B.O. I say!

He’s a politician … He’ll be for whatever the majority and GOP tell him to be for. We need to hold his feet to the fire to do what the majority working American citizen wants, not illegals, not rhinos, not minorities (including gays) and get him to acknowledge that government is too big and begin to dismantle and transfer responsibility to the public sector, to the small business owners (hiring and production), to churches (charity), private insurance/ investments (healthcare and retirement protection). Ryan is a good fit for this … but we must never let our guards down. Restoration of the constitution is paramount. With that, all things will gradually fall back into place. How about those Founding Fathers! Hurray!

Yep!!! Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah …. it’s endless whining and lying! Ignore them, go out and sign up conservatives and moderates, get them registered to vote and ignore the left.
