Government Motors Loses Taxpayer’s ‘Investments’

100730_obama_volt_ap_522_regularWell the news is out about General Motors has failed the taxpayers, who by force of the federal government, that invested in the company. Yeah I know we didn’t have a say in the “investment,” but Barack Obama didn’t mind “investing” our money in the corporation now known as Government Motors.

In May National Review was already reporting,

Three years ago his administration invested more than $100 billion in taxpayer money to bail out General Motors. On Tuesday, the entire company, not just what the government owns, was worth less than $34 billion. By anyone’s definition, that investment is a glaring failure. Yet over the last few days the Obama campaign, in a $25 million marketing blitz, has flooded the airwaves with ads in battleground states, claiming the bailout should be counted a rousing success.

Unfortunately, assertions that “all loans have been repaid to the federal government,” that the bailout “saved more than one million American jobs,” that “U.S. automakers are hiring hundreds of thousands of new workers,” that GM is again the “number-one automaker” — all are based on creative accounting.

The money the government spent adds up quickly: $50 billion in TARP bailout funds, a special exemption waiving payment of $45.4 billion in taxes on future profits, an exemption for all product liability on cars sold before the bailout, $360 million in stimulus funds, and the $7,500 tax credit for those who buy the Chevy Volt. GM’s share of other programs is harder to quantify but includes, for example, some of the $15.2 billion that went to Cash for Clunkers. Those costs are in addition to the billions taken from GM’s bondholders by the Obama administration.

Now it’s come out that GM’s profits are down a whopping 41%! The Guardian reports,

GM’s CEO Dan Akerson said: ‘We have more work to do to offset the headwinds we face.’

General Motors’ profits fell 41% in the second quarter as troubles in Europe undercut strong sales in North America.

America’s largest automaker made $1.5bn in the second quarter of 2012, compared with $2.5bn for the same period last year. Revenue fell to $37.6bn from $39.4bn in the second quarter of 2011. The results exceeded analysts’ estimates, but further underlined Europe’s drag on the US economy.

“Our results in North America were solid, but we clearly have more work to do to offset the headwinds we face, especially in regions like Europe and South America,” said GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “Despite the challenging environment, GM has now achieved 10 consecutive quarters of profitability, which is a milestone the company has not achieved in more than a decade.”

Now remember, one of Barack Obama’s campaign slogan was “Osama Bin Laden is dead, General Motors is alive?” I’m thinking they might want to rethink that slogan. On second, thought let’s hope they keep it.

We all know the answer to the bailout of GM, it has nothing to do with saving an American company, but everything to do about protecting the Unions. Taxpayer money is given to the Unions in the form of a bailout, taxpayer money comes back to Obama in the form of election campaign contributions. We in essence are funding Obamas reelection campaign.

  • Gringo Infidel

All that public money did was to save the UAW pensions. What a farce. Hypocrisy has lost its stigma.

    …and they can’t make a good car.

Buy Ford, the True American Car Company doing it the American Way, thru hard work and honesty!

  • Walt

I really wanted a Volt but I refuse to buy any Gov’t Motors vehicle. I bought a Ford and have been very happy with it.

Just one in a long list of failures by the Obama administration.

I am oh soooo Grateful to Govt. Motors for working diligently to ensure my predictions come true. Govt. Motors return to Bankruptcy is , as predicted, just around the next corner.

At this point you might ask, how far it is to the next corner? I could respond by, suggesting it would depend on who gets elected President this coming November. The truth is it really won’t matter. The only thing that really matters is will the Govt. send MORE good money after bad. Will Govt. ‘Double Down’ at Taxpayers expense ? That will be the difference between the Candidates.

The “TELL’” regarding GM’s return to Bankruptcy came in the form of results to an Investigative Report regarding Workers caught drinking and smoking dope during their Lunch Periods, The simple fact that such practices still existed (were never addressed) spoke volumes as did the allowances for seeking rehab (a cop-out) as opposed to a Union Initiated and diligent
educational program to alleviate such Entitlement Attitudes.

Guess what . . . . America is still on the same course as Govt. Motors. Draw your own Conclusions .

It is easy to make a profit when the government wipped away all of the debt that was on the books at GM. But now, they owe you and me $100B.. I want to sell my stock for whatever the market price is today, please send me a check Mr. President…………

  • jjkrjw

This presidents takes actions that are not constitutionally granted to the executive branch. GM’s preferred shareholders were denied their rights when this president gave stock in the company to the union instead. He continues to act on his own when he needs congressional approval. Speaker John Boehner has no spine to put an end to these actions.

  • mtsnj

so why are they proposing spending 600 million on a foreign soccer team (is it). They need to fail and get it over with.. Those bozos should of tooled up right away to compete with the mustang in ’05..but noooo, they were too stupid to compete, The camaro possibly could have saved them from the bail out. and now the Volt is a complete disaster, Government has them able to return their cars so they can count it as a sale.

  • darrelljr

i was a Chevrolet man, but after all this, I just refuse to buy another!!!

    • The Blue Collar Man

Odd. Haven’t seen anyone post here about all the business Gov Motors is doing in China. Lots of business!

  • mr_bad_example

there must be a special place in hell, where you get 10 little inch long razor cuts in your flesh, have habanero hot sauce applied, repeat 1000 times, a day, one hour of some salve applied, washed off, and the cuts repeated, every day for eternity, for Barack Hussein Obama… this happy thought keeps me going :)

    • Walt

According to Dante – In the ninth circle of hell there is a ring where you walk around and around and everytime you get to this demon – he slices you up with a sword. You heal slowly as you walk around and then he does it again, over and over. Will that do.

    • mr_bad_example

then my idea can be the 10th, the habanero sauce adds that extra “kick” ;)

  • RangerRick

President Black Obama is about to pull the handle and flush the US out to sea.

  • Sutekh

I was raised to be a GM buyer. But, sad to say, GM is no longer a manufacturer of fine automobiles. It is a manufacturer of excuses. I can get an excuse for less than $40,000, even without a government subsidy.

  • LUNKER

He sold us to China !!

This smells like the same kind of magic numbers they use to state the unemployment figures. When the actual ‘really’ unemployed who have given up or run out of benefits, are seriously underemployed in some low wage part time job that really barely pays the bills is around 22%, the ‘magic numbers’ claim its 8.2%.

    • JohnC

Magic numbers must be from the magic mushrooms the liberals consume …lol….. Yes I estimated the real unemployment number is around 18 to 22% the real inflation number is about 8%-10% not the 1 or 2 % they try to pawn off on us…. they are short changing the seniors on their SSI benefits they do not include Food or Energy in the Consumer Price Index… magic numbers there for sure….but it is really hurting the seniors …When the president can have his $85 dollar steak it is sad to know that some seniors have their can of cat food for dinner….if they don’t pay for their expensive medicines… our government is lying to us….

  • Chris in Kalifornia

General Motors aka Government Motors, is spending millions on racing programs instead of paying back the money they owe. That’s insane.

    • woodyfun1

You have a point. I’m a NASCAR fan, but if that’s true I admit it’s wrong.

  • 1gentready

If you wanted to wish something bad on anyone then I wish the very worst for the lying SOB Bast### barrack Obama.

  • Randy131

I remember hearing that some of that bailout money for GM also went to the Union, or at least part of the stock that the government got for security on the bailout loan, so can you explain the reasoning for the Union receiving what they did, and why the bond holders were wiped out with nothing in return for their investment in GM bonds? Thanks Tim, I really don’t know how you do it, seems to me you’re super human to write all these articles, and read the comments too.

We had a good sales report from govertment motors in June said sales were up. Only to find out later the government made a large purchase of Government motors vehicles. So Obama can claim his stimulis package worked.

    • Libssuck

And the next quarterly report wont come out until after the November elections.

  • el_loco_jp

Let GM fold. Move to china and take your Volt with you.
