Government Motor’s Engine About To Seize….Again?

GM-487x365Barack Obama has been touting the mantra that the automobile industry has been great proof that his policies work and have put people back to work. He was so confident in it that one of his first campaign ads was promoting the GM bailout. Last week he even proclaimed he wanted to do the same thing with every manufacturing industry in America. Well maybe Obama spoke a little bit too soon.

The Detroit News reports,

The Treasury Department says in a new report the government expects to lose more than $25 billion on the $85 billion auto bailout. That’s 15 percent higher than its previous forecast.

In a monthly report sent to Congress on Friday, the Obama administration boosted its forecast of expected losses by more than $3.3 billion to almost $25.1 billion, up from $21.7 billion in the last quarterly update.

The report may still underestimate the losses. The report covers predicted losses through May 31, when GM’s stock price was $22.20 a share.

Now taxpayers lost $1.3 billion on the Chrysler bailout.

GM still owes taxpayers an estimated $42 billion, according to an inspector general’s report.

GM owes $27 billion on the nearly $50 billion it received from the auto bailout and Ally Bank, the company’s lending arm, owes $14.7 billion of the $17.2 billion taxpayer-funded bailout it received.

This is the problem when the government gets involved in private businesses with taxpayer’s money. It never is good for the taxpayer and you can bet your bottom dollar that Obama will be willing to throw more money their way. But it isn’t just Obama.

Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney decried the losses on the auto bailout and insisted that letting GM and Chrysler go through bankruptcy first, would have saved the taxpayer’s money and I agree it would have. There are two problems though. The first is that if you read the article Romney was still willing to provide government money to the auto companies post-bankruptcy. Second, Romney just put a guy on his ticket that voted for the bailout. Paul Ryan voted for the auto bailout. Not only that, but he also voted for TARP which funded that auto industry. He did not support letting them go through bankruptcy.

Now, according to Charles Payne, from the Fox Business Network, it seems that GM is on the verge of bankruptcy and will need a bailout in the near future. Payne points out the numbers are all down both in Europe and America, the stock is down and the forecast is very bleak. To top it off the Chevy Volt is failing miserably, according to the Wall Street Journal.

I’m guessing we, the taxpayers will be the losers in all of this and I’m wondering if this will even come up in debate, seeing that both sides have a bit of egg on their face when it comes to bailing companies out with our money. I do think, however, that Joe Biden will need to take that idea about “GM is alive and Osama bin Laden is dead” and put that back in his pocket.

Even the buggy-whip industry would be “thriving” if it were given a free $50 Billion infusion of cash…

  • nvrat

Well-Well-Well, the Amateur and Chief is at it again Lie-Lie-Lie. One thing the article did not say is that the biggest customer GM has is the Federal Government. For some reason they replaced most of their fleet with…what else but…GM Cars and Trucks. Ya Think it was to help the message?

  • Dude

You should also add the billions the stockholders lost as well when the Obama administration picked saving the unions and their retirement packages instead of the stockholders (knock me over with a feather on that choice).

A new car is something I’ll never buy again..400 to 500 dollar a month payments , gas 4 dollars a gallon, Insurance more than what it’s worth and ad-valorem taxes every year on the vehicle just to be able to drive it on the roads , No Thanks …

  • kbcab

Obama believes all of that bull-shit that comes out of his mouth. It’s amazing how some of the dumbest people in the world are in charge of something that always effects others , but then again I think Obama knows exactly what he is doing and if all the dumb-ass liberals and whinners get their way he is going to accomplish just what he set out to do and that’s to destroy America…

  • Phil F

GM is bankrupt just like Obama and we the taxpayers will have to bail them out. Obama Must Go.

  • jim28threg

I have a used GM P/U & auto but will never purchase a new one. The new will be Ford or VW or both.

  • Mad Mike

The only difference I can see between Barack Husaine Obama and Adolph Hitler is: The car Hitler ordered built for the German public, the Volkswagen, was far better than the car Obama orderd built for America, the Chevy Volt! Besides that fact, I see little difference between them.

    • sandman4X4

the problem with your story is, the Volt was on the drawing board before obummer came into the picture.

    • Gee

What Difference Does Being On The Drawing Board Matter, If It Had Not Been Built?. The Point Mad Mike Is Making Is A Valid Point. Wake Up?. Cheers Semper Fi

I can’t believe all you folks on this site, that say you love your Country, but just because you hate the Gov. you give up on a great American institution like GM! as much as I hate the current admin. I still drive a Chevy, and I always will, it is NOT GM that is failing us, it is all the people that are failing GM, what is so wrong with their products? I have owned many, and have had nothing but good luck and service from them, and Dodge for that matter, I will not give up on my Country, why give up on her products, I know, I know, what happend to all the bond and share holders, but thatwas obummer that did that with his ZarZ’s and henchmen, and union pinky ring wearing jerks that stole the company from the true investors, but you know what? YOU are the new investors, and you would just as soon cut you nose off in spite of your face! what the he)) for? hatred of the system, well you are no better than the “progessives that hated Pres. Bush” so much, that we got obummer, you are doing the same thing! I say if there was a Chevy or Chrysler or Ford in every driveway, we wouldn’t be in this mess we are in now!!!! you all talk a good talk, but when the rubber meets the road, you are no better than the prius driving liberals! and are being part of the problem and not the solution! Come on folks, wake up! look at what you are doing! open your minds to what you are telling the liberals to do! that is one way to show them ! I love it when a lib. asks me how can I drive a Chevy, when I hate obummer so much, and they can’t take the answer, That I love the product, but hate the man! they can’t get over it! they think I will just roll over and buy some car or truck from another country! He00 NO. I wont! American all the way!!!! the ONLY way WE are going to get OUR $$$$$ back, is for GM and Chrysler to sell cars and trucks!!! and you know what that means? WE have to go BUY them, the liberals are not going to do so, they just as soon buy imported stuff, or maybe a car or truck made here, but from a foreign company, where the $$$ goes over seas never to be seen again! It’s the trde inbalance that is killing us, and we can do something about it! it is tough to buy some stuf made here, and not china and such, but here we have a CHOICE, and some of you don’t use it? come on people, wake up, before it’s to late.

    • Gee

Ford Motor Company Is The Real American Institution. Government Motor Company, Soon To Be The Chinese Motor Company. With It’s New Name Change will be “The Communist Motor Campany”. Cheers Semper Fi.

    • sandman4X4

not if you folks get off you high horse and buy American products! we have the power right in our hands, but sorry to say a lot of you would rather cut your nose off in spite of your face.

    • Carl in SC

Sandman, Are you really not aware that even if GM and Chrysler were able to repay the money to the government, Obama would quickly find some other industry or country to give it to. We’ll still be building up massive debt and deficit as long as he is president. Taxpayers will get nothing but a bigger tax bill. BTW, has anyone seen how much taxes Obama has paid each year for the last 5 or 10? I didn’t think so and it will stay hidden just like all his other records. So if I ever buy a new American made car besides Honda it would have to be the oldest American producer FORD.

    • sandman4X4

I am fully aware of the $ situation, but that has nothing to do with Americans not buying American prdusts like I suggested, and go ahead and buy a Ford, it is a fine product, they make a great truck, as far as honda goes……. are you aware that in Japan, we are not alowed to sell our cars and trucks there without some type of limit? the only bright spot on the trade inbalance with Japan, is Harley Davidson, you know that Great all American co.? did you know that of all the motorcycles sold over 800C.C.’s in Japan Harley Davidson in # 1? thats right # 1! that is because even tha Japaness people love our products! they just can’t get them, the only reason why they can get HD’s is because the electronics and suspensions are made in Japan, and the motorcycles have to be shipped unassembled in what is known as a knock-down kit, put together in a factory in Japan! I found this out when I took the factory tour in York PA, and I know you are going to say the honda is made in America, and you are correct, buut that is NOT out of the goodness of there heart! it is because labor here in America (expecialy non-union labor in the American Japaness factories) is lower than in Japan, plus they get all kinds of tax incentives to build their factories here, plus all the PR BS to go along with it! But when the $$$$ leaves here, and goes to Japan, it will never come back to America! unless it is to get more PR BS!

    • Carl in SC

OK, you want to talk limits. A few decades ago GM and maybe Ford and Chrysler also got congress to pass a surtax or import fee on Japanese cars so they could compete better. Immediately afterward it seemed the price of GM cars went up also. But now Japanese & Korean autos and trucks are produced stateside.
Good for Harley Davidson. They’re good cycles. I don’t have a motorcycle but the smaller ones like the Ninja are more appealing if I wanted to buy one.
Japanese, Germans, British, Korea have factories in the USA and a number of them are in the South, the area the Big Three will not produce in.
Money Going to Japan not coming back? Look at the back of your radios, TVs, stereo systems, other electronics for place of manufacture. Practically all are imported from Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, China.
If we don’t get a different president and some more conservative to moderates in congress in November we’re likely to see more jobs sent overseas or to Mexico and South America. We’d better wise up.

  • Mad Mike

The evidence is “in your face”! Obama is a Marxist/Communist believer, thoughly indoctrinated into Communisum as a teenager by his real father, Frank Marshall Davis! As a “red diaper baby”, Berry Soertoro, (AKA Barack Husaine Obama), was raised by Davis and his mother Ann Dunham, both active members of the communist party, and both engaged in making illegal, underground ponographic movies, photo’s and porno books which they sold. Communists do not recognize “private property” of any kind. Everything belongs to the state. Hence, Obama’s desire to fund, (thus own), General Motors and eventually, all businesses in america. Obama and his fellow Czars, Comrades,(democrats), are quickly transforming america into their vision of a Communist ruled dictatorship. One with Obama as President for life! This is where Obama is headed, and he is willing to totally bankrupt our country to get there!

    • sandman4X4

Mike I do believe everything you said, but the only way for us to stop him is to 1) vote him out of office! and 2) Buy American products whenever and wherever we can! as much as I hate the man, I would still buy American products made by fellow Americans!

  • jim hesselrode

It is a shame. We say buy American all the time but to buy American we would buy a Toyota Camray. It is the most American (workers, materials, etc) of any car built here. Ford did not take a bail out. Does this not give GM and Chrysler a huge advantage? Who do you think Government will buy their cars from. I just don’t like the Government bailing out companies. If these companies were any good, they could get their money from banks. The tax payer is not a banker for the union.

When you see the email about GM’s operations in China, you might not be pleased. The 2004 Silverado that I mistakenly bought new convinced me after six unsuccessful trips to the dealership for repairs that It would be my last GM product. Emails and calls to GM had no results until the day after I traded the truck with 1,800 miles on it. Their dealership network and bond holders received some nice GM benefits too. Mr. Payne is correct, it’s only a matter of time until the GM doors are closed.

  • jim

what can you expect from a goverment run busisness the us post office is in the red and has been that way for a long time.we pay more for stamps and get less service.
there was a time when we had 2 day service and same day delivery if mailed in same town to be dlireved in.

    • sandman4X4

if you knew what you are talking about you would be saying something, but the truth is, congress has required USPS to pay into the retirement fund for 50yrs in ADVANCE, no other employer, private or public has to do that! combined with 1st classmailbeing down 70%, well if you have any brains you would know what is wrong! they generate $5 billion in rev. and the retirement fund is projected to be 15B, so there you have you shortage.

    • jim

get the goverment out of post office busisness and let private busisness do it ,they would do a far better job of it.

    • jim

at least in time past we had far better service from the usps than we have now. now they are talking about cutting service again

Quite frankly I’m glad I can still buy GM parts, that might not be true if the bail-out didn’t happen, even Paul Ryan voted for it. Sometimes industrialists run perfectly good enterprises into the ground, or move them to China, how is that “free enterprise” working for you now?!. At least one US car company is sort of in all our interest, don’cha think?

not being able to repay a loan of the Republics money, is in our interest? How about Fords who didn’t have to take a Republics loan, and i use this term( Republics) because its not the government money it never was. Last i heard Fords also has union’s and yet they didn’t fail there company buy making promises they could not keep. yet there workers jobs are pretty secure. bottom line the goverment has never made a profit on any company they try to run, why because that not what they where ment for, they are not set up for that, to many checks and blances, to many hands in the cookie jar, 35% get government hand outs, and they advertise that theres more all you have to do is ask, 15 trillion in debt, government medical care, open your eyes, do you see a patten here!! i don’t care what party you are for, you no longer decide for your self, the president thinks he doesn’t have to get approvel to make a decision he just does it, its the right thing to do, so i guess its ok to rob a bank because my family is going hungery and being put on the street because we can’t afford the house note, its the right thing to do for my family, that what i get from president Obama, most think he’s doing it for election reason i think it’s both, part relection part because of the way he was rasied, he’s been around socialist, radicals and terrosit most of his life, seems to me some of that rubed off onto him, but yet he fooled a lot of people into voting for him, and if he gets a secound term Katie bar the doors, it will get even more ugly, they will work on the secound ammenment more, more government control in broadcasting, they still have a way to go in the control of the rich, this is done by taxes. take more and more until you end up with the bigger piece of the pie, when you have the bigger piece you get less resistance from the smaller piece, hence control.

This site sure keeps me busy!
I have just written a letter to my Senators and Congressman to let them know that I am aware of the status of this boondoggle and asking that they demand our money back from GM and Chrysler and Ally Bank.
I am proposing that the government confiscate and liquidate ALL assets held by these entities and return the money to the Treasury where it can be applied against our debt.
Maybe Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, etc. will buy their equipement, kick the unions OUT!, and manufacture dependable cars and trucks.

  • fort9erdon

GM to go through bankruptcy! Good, let it go! Let the chips fall where they may. Let China bail them out! Or, give the unions a good screwing, as that’s what the unions have been doing to GM, AND the taxpayers for years! After bankruptcy, tell those $85.00 an hour, union prima donnas over at GM, we got jobs, but they pay $10.00 bucks an hour! You want benefits, you pay!

  • Doc

Blame it all on the unions.
