I wrote at the end of July about how House RINOs were indicating that they will not defund Obamacare. They expressed that continuing to fund the health care law, that Americans overwhelmingly are opposed to and that they were sent to Washington to repeal and in fact did vote to repeal it 32 times, would simply be politically expedient and take the issue of a government shut down off the table. Well it’s yet to be seen as to whether they are going to fund it, but by doing so they are endorsing attacks on the First Amendment and religious liberty.
Though she called the mandate “offensive” to religious liberty, Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY) wouldn’t say on Wednesday whether she will vote for the continuing resolution that will continue funding that will implement the Health and Human Services regulation that requires health plans to offer sterilizations, contraceptives, and abortifacients free of charge.
“The members here said today that [they would take] any way, any means necessary to get rid of this mandate. So, will you personally vote for a continuing resolution that funds this mandate after Sept. 30?”
“I think to predict what we’re going to do and to speculate as we go forward — we have not seen a CR. When we see the CR, when we see what’s included in the CR, then we’ll have that debate,” Buerkle said.
CNSNews.com followed up: “But there is talk that the leadership in the House and Senate has come to an agreement to keep the government funded at the same levels?”
“Well, I look forward to seeing what they’ve agreed to and seeing whether or not it’s consistent with my views,” she said.
It would be one thing to call this “offensive” and then support a measure that continued to violate the Constitutional rights of American citizens and religious conscience.
Rep. Bill Long (R-Mo) said,
“America 2012. Land of the free, home of the brave. Are we still the land of the free and home of the brave? Let’s examine that for just a minute. I know we’re the home of the brave because if we walk off that House floor five days a week, three or four days, they’ll be a wounded warrior sitting there just like the one that was there yesterday.”
“He had no right arm, he had no left arm except for an artificial arm and an artificial hand, he was proud to shake my hand, with his artificial hand to show me how it worked,” Long continued. “He had no legs below the thighs. His wife was standing next to him with less than a 1-year-old child in her hands.”
“You don’t have to worry about the brave,” he said. “We’re still home of the brave, but we’re not the land of the free anymore. And we need to get that straight.
“When you’re not free to practice religious freedom in this country, what in the world have we come to?” Long asked rhetorically. “Seriously, goodness gracious.”
CNS also reported,
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives could stop this regulation that Republican members and the Catholic Church have called an attack on religious liberty by prohibiting funding for it in the next continuing resolution to fund the government after Sept. 30. However, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), and other House Republicans have indicated that they will fund the implementation of the regulation.
Rep. Mike Kelly, who, just last week slammed the Congress for big government regulations chimed in declaring,
“I know in your mind you can think of the times that America was attacked: one is December 7th, that’s the Pearl Harbor date,” he said. “The other is September 11th, and that’s the day of the terrorist attack.”
“I want you to remember August 1, 2012, the attack on our religious freedom,” said Kelly. “That is a date that will live in infamy along with those other dates.”
“The question is if not us, who, if not now, when?” Kelly said. “It is our turn, there is no option, we have to stand up now and defend our Constitution.”
I”m glad to hear these men and women declaring what is actually taking place here. Our rights are under attack by the very government entrusted to protect them. Now here is the thing, I’m going to expect these same representatives to put their money where their mouths are and stand against the CR and protect our liberties instead of funding nonsense that destroys our liberties.
