The twenty-six year old Arizona Chick-Fil-A worker who was berated by Adam Smith in a video that went viral on the internet last week appeared on Fox News channel alongside her fiance in order to express her thoughts on the event. Many have applauded and cheered the young woman in how she demonstrated grace under pressure, fighting back the temptation to give an irate bully of a customer a taste of his own medicine. But she simply demonstrated the teachings of Jesus Christ in her response.
When asked about how she felt about Mr. Smith’s apology video, she responded,
“I appreciate that he came forward, but I’m definitely interested in speaking with him. I want to see if he was sincere and let him know why I handled it the way I did and not take legal action, which a lot of people told me I should do.”
“There’s no reason to drag him through the mud any more than he has been.”
While Smith drove through the drive-thru for his “free water” which he was excited about, he clearly had every intention of letting whoever was at the window have a piece of his mind. He just never expected the polite, courteous manner that he would be given in response. Apparently at the time he thought he would get a rise out of the young woman.
She said her main fear was that he was videoing the incident and she knew he would be posting it.
“I’m Christian and God tells us to love thy neighbor,” she added. “One of my friends saw they video and said, ‘Yep that’s Rachel and that’s the way she is.”
Smith produced another video after he was fired from his job for his conduct with Rachel stating, “Rachel, I am so very sorry for the way I spoke to you on Wednesday. You handled my frustrating rant with such dignity and composure. Every time I watch the video I am blown away by really the beauty in what you did, and your kindness, and your patience with me.”
Rachel confirmed that Smith did make an attempt to apologize the next day before losing his job. I do think his apology to her was sincere and I think Rachel’s response was even more sincere.
“I’d really like to know if he could separate the issue from me and the company. The workers have nothing to do with the political beliefs with people in the corporation,” she said. “I don’t want to be part of that puzzle.”
While Mike Huckabee called her a hero, which even Rachel said that she was not, one thing is for sure and that is that Rachel demonstrated a graciousness to the one who persecuted her and her company that reflects the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ who said:
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
May many more Americans should follow in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus and learn from Rachel’s example.
