Outrage: Website Targets Concealed Carry Permit Holders

concealed-carry-owbNews station WRAL in Raleigh, North Carolina has caused quite a bit of outrage among gun rights activists. Their website gives users the option of “Finding concealed carry permit holders in your area. CCW activists claim it is akin to making them appear as “sex offenders.”

The searchable box, located about halfway down the page, allows one to enter their street, city, county and zip code and find out who in their area has obtained a CCW permit.

David Knight, a concerned resident in North Carolina emailed Infowars.com:

“Although street numbers are not shown (yet), as they point out most of the carry permits are in rural areas. On my road for example, there are only 4 home sites. On many rural roads there are only 1 or 2 houses. This information has previously only been available by written request from the State Bureau of Investigation.”

Indeed, when activist group Grass Roots Norths Carolina (GRNC) complained to WRAL, the news station responded by erroneously claiming the data was publicly available, when in fact it can only be obtained via an application to the SBI.

Knight says the news station’s act of helping the public identify gun owners is an attempt to name and shame while suggesting that second amendment advocates “pose a potential threat akin to sex offenders.”

GRNC demanded that the search be removed from the site and an apology issued. If it was not, then the group also threatened to use its database of 60,000 gun owners to target WRAL’s advertisers for a boycott.

Their letter to WRAL read,

As our members have noted, WRAL-TV has engaged in the most irresponsible sort of journalism, potentially exposing concealed handgun permit-holders to criminal predation. Whether the information is available as public record (where it is only available if requested from the State Bureau of Investigation) is irrelevant. Even absent specific names, you have created a database searchable by location, including small streets on which it should be relatively easy to determine which homes contain firearms. We have now received dozens of complaints from gun-owning North Carolinians.

As you may be aware, Grass Roots North Carolina was the principal architect of our state’s concealed handgun law and improvements made since its inception in 1995. We have a longstanding policy of addressing this type of journalistic irresponsibility by using economic action. Accordingly, I strong advise WRAL to: (1) Remove the search link from its site immediately; and (2) Issue a public apology to North Carolina concealed handgun permit-holders.

If the information is not removed by the open of business on Friday (July 13, 2012), Grass Roots North Carolina will use its email alert network of nearly 60,000 gun owners to target selected WRAL advertisers with a message that gun owners will not buy from them until they terminate their advertising relationship with your station. We will then rotate from one advertiser to the next until the information is removed. I would suggest you contact your superiors and address the problem immediately.

F. Paul Valone

President, Grass Roots North Carolina

The station refuses to meet the demands of the group. Those in the Triangle area may want to consider linking up with GRNC.

The public has no business knowing who is carrying concealed and who is not. That sort of defeats the purpose in many ways, especially if a criminal should gain access to that information in order to commit a crime against a person who carries their weapon concealed. It is completely irresonsible of WRAL. If you agree, feel free to contact that station and voice your outrage.

Im adding my own info to their database. Too bad they dont give a line for street address. I dont care if these nuts know I carry.

What we ShOULD do, however, is all of us go post made up names and information to overload their listing so they dont know what is what.

This should bother non-permit holders more than the ones that have guns because by simple deductions the criminal element can know who is less likley to be able to defend themselves and their homes with firearms , I am PROUDLY listed .

This should be a good reason to totally drop the Conceal Carry or Open Carry Permit requirements to begin with, law abiding citizens who are gun owners should not be required to have a permit sold to them by their State.

Gun buyers should just be able to purchase their gun and not need a Permit or License to carry their gun Openly or Concealed. The Right to Keep and Bare Arms is that a Right, not a State Sanctioned Privilege like some States want you to believe it is.

The other issue is, if a CCW individual is attacked &/or killed or injured, or a member of their family is, and any link at all (even the most remotest of links), that can connect this revealed data to the attacker, should be used to sue all involved both professionally & personally. Once some anti activist do gooders find out they face economic destruction for their vicious methods, they may want to back down.

      Same here.

These little $$$$bags dont intimidate anyone.

I I the only one who noticed the date of this OLD NEWS ,July 2012, Surely this website can get more updated news,if not then do not bother to post. The fight for gun rights is here and now, not six months old. No wonder we lost the election.

There needs to be a web site where you can find out the addresses of media types as well as their private phone numbers. If any media outlet shows any bias towards any particular political party they should lose their tax exempt status. They should only be tax exempt if truly unbiased and report the news and not try and influence public opinion. They are free to report the truth not to lie or try to influence elections.

So wonderful to be a gun owner!

“It is completely irresonsible of WRAL.”

Of course they are irresponsible, as they consider that their opinions and goals are loftier than everyone else’s rights.

non gun owners should sue them for making them targets of robbers because if they know who has gun they are not going to rob them they are going for the unarmed victims

well, there is one thing to be said about this—if you want to pull off a home invasion robbery check this list and stay away from those listed on it

LOL the big fat NRA sticker on every entry point to my house will likely clue them in long before some idiotic website does. Any would be burglar who comes into my home while I’m here will be sprouting wings about 15 seconds after I draw down on him. May be bat wings but wings nonetheless. ;)

If there are any burglaries that result in the theft of any firearms anywhere within the data-base area then the radio station and the operator of the website, including any hosting services, need to be prosecuted for aiding and abetting.
If the local DA won’t prosecute then serve them civilly.
Better yet, have them civilly enjoined and placed on notice that they will be considered as co-conspirators for any firearms related thefts.

Here in Ohio we have a CCW law too! The newspapers requested & received access to the confidential list of CCW holders & PUBLISHED [I believe] a list of CCW holders by last name & county.
WRAL if my gun is stolen or taken from me SINCE, based on your public disclosures, the criminals know I have a CCW and it is used in a crime I want the right to name you as a codefendent under the joint liability statutes for damages!!!!!!!!!!!!
