While the Democrats and other gun rights opponents call for even more gun control laws, let’s examine what the gun control laws actually do. gun control laws only protect criminals. The do absolutely nothing to protect innocent law-abiding citizens.
For instance, let’s take a look at Aurora, Colorado, where James Holmes entered a theater armed with a rifle and a pair of handguns. According to Colorado’s own Firearms ordinances, with reference to Aurora (emphasis mine):
1. “Dangerous weapon” includes firearm
2. Revocation of license for furnishing a firearm to a minor or someone under the influence.
3. Window displays cannot include firearms with barrels less than 12 inches long.
4. Unlawful to carry concealed “dangerous weapon”
5. Unlawful to discharge firearms, unless by law enforcement on duty or on shooting range.
6. Unlawful to possess firearm while under the influence of intoxicant
7. Unlawful to have loaded firearm in motor vehicle.
8. Unlawful for a juvenile to possess a firearm.
I have previously pointed out that the cinema, where the shooting took place, did not allow weapons to be taken in. Locally, Aurora tried to have concealed carry permits banned, but this is unenforceable due to conflict with state law.
The laws also prohibits the discharging of a firearm, except by law enforcement on duty or on a shooting range.
In addition, we now know that Holmes also took 100mg of Vicodin, an controlled substance and opioid with side effects that can include “altered mental states, confusion, fear, unusual thoughts or behavior.”
So far all the people arguing for more laws, I put forth the question: Which of these laws kept James Holmes from entering the theater and discharging at will the firearms he had while high on a controlled substance? Which new laws would keep him or any other criminal from killing anyone?
The truth is right in front of us and people just don’t want to see it for what it is. That truth is that gun control laws, the infringing of people’s God-given rights, only protect criminals, not law-abiding citizens.
At the end of the day, the one person unharmed in the event was James Holmes.
I could point to the Columbine shootings, which took place very close to this latest shooting, and declare that the two individuals unharmed by anyone were Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. They died at their own hands, not at the hands of others. By the way, the public schools are nothing more than a shooting range for kids. If you send your kid off to the public school, you are doing nothing more than rounding them up for a potential massacre.
Liberals who want to respond emotionally and cry for more gun laws do nothing but exacerbate the problem. While some have the best of intentions (and you know what they say about the best of intentions: the road to Hell…), they are mistaken. Some, no doubt, know exactly what they are doing when they call for more gun laws and they want to see an unarmed America.
The problem with more gun control laws is that they make law-abiding citizens more vulnerable, unprotected, and helpless, while it doesn’t actually do one thing to stop what they claim the laws are in place to stop. The only ones people can count on in a time of crisis is themselves. If they are allowed to exercise their God given, Constitutional rights then they at least have the ability to protect themselves, loved ones, and even strangers from thugs who would seek to take advantage of what gun laws provide them.
Lawmakers today forget one thing: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” They do not take into account the depravity of man. Men can sink to deepest depths of sin and no law can stop them from their descent and that’s because it is not the job of the law to stop anything. The job of the law is to point out what is right and what is wrong. The law does not have the ability to stop anyone from doing anything if they are determined to do it.
Laws that infringe on the people’s rights to both keep and bear their firearms are in direct violation of the Second Amendment and should be repealed immediately by true patriots in government. The question before the people is to determine who are not the true patriots and get them out of office. For by leaving them in office we are only empowering the criminal element of our society.
UPDATE: Per Doc HUdson in the comments section and via the links provided demonstrate the reason Aurora, CO could not enforce their anti-CCW laws. It was because they were in conflict with state law and eventually overturned. Hudson says:
Colorado is a ‘shall issue’ concealed carry state. Arapahoe County which encompasses most of Aurora has no such ordinance restricting CC in the city limits or otherwise. It is true, however that Cinemark the owner of Century 16 Aurora Center has a ‘No Weapons’ policy.
The ordinance you refer to was overturned by the state legislature in 2003. Denver is the only municipality that has sued to maintain its Concealed Carry ban. This law was used by the Colorado Supreme Court to overturn the carry ban on the University of Colorado campus. Again, as I’ve stated, the information you cited has been overturned and is out of date.
By the way, whether CCW was in effect or not, the theater, as I stated in the article, had a “No Weapons” Sign and did not tolerate them on their premises, which they are allowed to do as a private business.
