Hopefully I’m going to continue to bring to light some stories of just how effective armed citizens can be against the criminal element of our society. Today is one such story that happened back in April of this year in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.
The event took place at Smith’s Marketplace. Apparently a customer purchased a knife then went into the foyer of the store and began stabbing people at random yelling, “You killed my people!” according to employee Dorothy Espinoza.
Espinoza said that two customers were stabbed, one in the stomach and the other in the head and also the arms as they sought to protect themselves.
Before the suspect could attack another patron Espinoza said, “A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith’s grabbed him.”
Officers, as well as, other customers had high praise for the man that ended the madness. Lt. Brian Purvis said, “This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time.”
While the story at the time was posted to Drudge and NBCnews.com, it has regained exposure this week in light of the gun control lobby and their push for more laws.
Some people will just continue to be knuckleheads like Steve Gunn, a gun control advocate, who said, “Society is better off not allowing the carrying of concealed weapons. There are many circumstances where guns act as an accelerant, they cause people to become more belligerent, more aggressive when someone has a gun.”
Apparently Mr. Gunn has not been in a situation where the need of a gun was an issue, nor would he provide any examples of the “many circumstances.” It appears in this case instead of accelerating things, it stopped them. More than likely if the knife wielder had attempted to go any further in his rampage, it would have no doubt stopped as well with two taps to center mass and then one to the cranio-ocular cavity.
In contradiction to Mr. Gunn’s claim, society is worse off with more gun laws, not safer. Just remember, always take your gun to a knife fight!
